So how’s your Google+ account going? I hope it wasn’t suspended for not using a real name like ours was (though you can now follow Aussie Gizmodo stories via my G+ account). Google’s official rule is “use your full first and last name in a single language” — but what happens if you only have one legal name? Like those with traditional Aboriginal ‘skin names’.
Lifehacker posed the question to Google Australia, and here’s the response:
“I don’t have a specific comment for your enquiry about traditional indigenous names – but I would say that we’re in field trial mode, and taking on feedback and making changes during this time – for instance, on making one’s gender public or private.”
Sounds reasonable to me, and you can follow the story further over at [Lifehacker]

Friday, July 29, 2011 at 11:16 AMI dont see what the problem is – if you only have 1 name and you need 2 for a service, make a second name up.

Friday, July 29, 2011 at 9:39 PMIt makes the whole enterprise no better than Farcebook. I don’t understand why Google bothered. It is indeed ludicrous.

Friday, July 29, 2011 at 10:52 PMI think its a bit silly to not allow game tags. And culturally insensitive to not allow Aboriginal names. I do know one of the reasons why they want “real” names…. to prevent troll and frauds.

Monday, August 1, 2011 at 2:24 PMIt’s quite interesting that Gizmodo Australia was suspended, but not Lifehacker Australia…
