There’s about 3000 little lenses all lined up with larger ones in the centre and smaller ones to the periphery. The only animals that we know of today that do that are arthropods, things like crayfish and crabs and your regular house flies. This is a creature which probably had quite good vision for a marine creature.
At the time, most creatures had very basic vision organs. This is the first time that something so complex has been discovered. Apparently, it may be one of the “greatest fossils finds” of our time.
They were found along with six other similar specimens on Kangaroo Island by South Australian Museum’s paleontologist Dr Jim Gehling and Dr Jim Jago. [ABC.net.au]

Friday, July 1, 2011 at 12:00 PMPretty awesome discovery. Made even more awesome by the fact it was found in our backyard! Wonder what scientists will be able to deduce from this find?
ps. I’m a creationist who isn’t simple minded and I resent your comment.

Saturday, July 2, 2011 at 11:24 AMI don’t subscribe to the creation theory, but you are showing your closed-mindedness with a blanket statement like “Creationists are idiots.” If an answer is ever found to the ultimate question of how things began to exist, it will be an illogical one. There are huge holes in all of the current theories; it just depends on which theory you believe. To me, evolution is the answer, but how were things brought into existence in order to evolve?
