Discarded Storage Containers Make A Delightful House

Gabriela Calvo and Marco Peralta wanted to build their dream house in San Jose, Costa Rica, debt-free. Rather than buy into cheap public housing, they snagged two discarded storage containers and let architect Benjamin Garcia work his magic.

The structure Mr Garcia built for the couple is dazzling. It has full-length glass windows, an internal open design, and cross-ventilation so efficient they don’t need air conditioning. Best of all, it only cost $US40,000 to build. A steal by anyone’s measurement. [Arch Daily]

    Yeah,.. don’t know if I’d use the words ‘Delightful’ or ‘Dazzling’ but I’d live in one of these! I think you could actually build something ‘Delightful’ or ‘Dazzling’ with a bit more imagination..

    would be easy to add an extension…I think there’s a kickstarter project on building an ‘open source’ shipping container to house conversion plan.

    Funnily enough. . . a few years ago when the government proposed using shipping containers for prison cells they were hit with a huge backlash.

      Yep… Shipping containers were too big and plans were too luxurious. It was almost considered as an option for public housing though.

      Hmm, they get very hot in there in the summer and cold in the winter, somehow I doubt the Gov would have been too bothered about niceties like aircon.. Although I am surprised that the Yanks haven’t started using them yet! Or maybe they have… :}

        Insulation fixes any temperature problems, but personally I would use ‘High Cube’ shipping containers for the extra height.

    As much of a warm fuzzy feeling we get by recycling unused shipping containers, they’re useless as housing in most locations.

    These things have almost no insulation. The walls are dual thin layers of steel. You place one of these in the outback as seen in those photos and you’ll be freezing your nuts off during the night.

    I think its a great idea storage containers would make a cosy house and it would a low cost idea for many that are building on a budget It would also be a great idea for the homeless to live in and call somewhere home
