US Government Investigates Google’s Hacking Accusations

After word dropped that hundreds of US Government officials were involved in a Gmail phishing scheme originating from China, many fingers have been pointed in many directions. China says blaming them is unfair, while the US says it’s now investigating.

Hong Lei, an official for the Chinese foreign ministry was not pleased:

“Blaming these misdeeds on China is unacceptable,” Hong Lei, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman told a news briefing in Beijing.

“Hacking is an international problem and China is also a victim. The claims of so-called Chinese state support for hacking are completely fictitious and have ulterior motives.”

Meanwhile, Hilary Clinton is calling Google’s allegations “very serious”, saying the US is “looking into them”. And though the emails of Government officials were hacked, the White House made the clarification that they were personal accounts, not official work email accounts. [Telegraph, Reuters, AP]
