If you live and breathe sport, then Channel Nine’s new app, Nine Extra, looks like it’ll be an automatic download. It lets you watch in-game highlights and on demand replays shortly after live broadcast on Channel Nine. And it’s set to make it’s official debut right before the next State of Origin match.
According to David Knox over at TV Tonight, the app was trialled during the second Origin clash this week, and features almost everything a rugby league loving sports fan could ask for:
Trialled for the first time in this week’s State of Origin game, it features multi-camera-angle video on demand available just moments after it happens, live scores and match statistics, State of Origin match historical data, team and player profiles, live feed of Nine’s State of Origin Twitter feed, live news feeds from Nine’s commentary team and expert panel, and profiles of the Wide World of Sports rugby league broadcast team. It will also have archival vision from 2011 Harvey Norman State of Origin games one and two.
This is an extremely powerful and exciting development for both television and tablets – adding value to a broadcast with detailed information and interactive controls. Nine plans to expand the app to support other events – lets hope the idea takes off in a big way…

Friday, June 17, 2011 at 1:12 PMSo, it’s not a FIXPLAY iPad app? It’s disappointing to see the 7, 9 and 10 Networks lagging the ABC in terms of device compatibility. I’m always using ABC’s iView iPad app.

Sunday, May 27, 2012 at 6:47 PM10 has catch up on thier normal site that is iPad compatible. It detects the iPad and replaces the Flash player with an HTML 5 version.
Just go to http://www.ten.com.au and select Episodes and Video.

Friday, June 17, 2011 at 5:13 PMHonestly this amazes me – Telstra is the rights holder for NRL online and on mobile, I have no idea how Nine is doing this …

Sunday, June 19, 2011 at 9:28 PMI wouldnt panic. All nine will have to do is restrict it to Telstra devices and a cut of the advertising. This aside, sports broadcasting rights are such a can of worms that it is unlikely this will come out any time soon. Eg. in the UK, even sports commentary cannot be broadcast digitally, only on non-digital radio. Only ESPN in the US seems to have gotten it off the ground with their ESPN (US restricted) App.

Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 2:50 PMA sports related app-a quite interesting choice for 9. Hope 9 can use it for other NRL games too.
Have you heard anything from 9 and 7 about plans for catch-up iPad apps for Fixplay and PLUS7.
