Aussie Online Stores Made A Lot Of Cash Last Year

Gizmodo AU

According to the ABS, Aussie online stores sold $143 billion worth of goods in the 09/10 financial year. And Gerry Harvey reckons there’s no money in the web…

As Gus from Lifehacker points out, that’s a 15 per cent increase on the previous year, which just goes to show that online is a real player when it comes to spending (or making) money in Australia.

I’m not sure if you’re being sarcastic or not…

But Gerry Harvey never said that :P he was pointing out the fact that buinesses online selling to Australians do so without the 10% GST increase which is undermining the local retail sector in some areas driving down demand, jobs and wealth creation here at home.

He’s also launched his own website which I assume will be based in Hong Kong to avoid the GST like everyone else to stay on an even playing field.

Tell Allans and Billy Hydes that.

Actually scrap that I’ve seen over RRP prices on floor stock at Billy Hydes.

Sold a lot does not necessarily = made a lot.

No, Gerry does not think there is no money in the web, just no profit.

I could start a business tomorrow and sell a billion dollars worth of stuff online, you just have to sell it for less than everyone else.

The difficulty is selling stuff online and making a profit, especially competing with overseas retailers that don’t have to pay GST, superannuation, decent wages, worry about OH&S, australian tax, etc, etc…..

$143 billion. Mind blown. All that in online goods. And they’re only the AUSSIE domains. I knew the dollar was strong but holy shit.

Gerry Harvey means, there is not enough profit for him in online sales.

I think Gerry Harvey is stuck in the 90′s, because he seems to be complaining about a lot of things because his company is longer #1 in his retail section, and has fallen behind the times with keeping up to date with Technology!

..and yet Aus online stored often sell for close to the same unreasonable markup up as the bricks and mortar brigade. So if you can exclude the rent excuse…what exactly is the reason for the discrepancy retail trade association?

Galaxy Tab 10.1 (the new one!): $699 at mobicity (does have a presence so not a true comparison…but fyi), $499 at Amazon – all up with freight to and from a second party to ship to Australia and a transformer (just in case) and travel plug and the satisfaction of not feeding the overcharging paradigm..STILL less than $699….priceless.
