A Tablet For Kids Isn’t A Bad Idea

Have you seen kids play with iPads before? They’re enchanted by them, mesmerised by the interaction. For some reason, they just speak them. LeapFrog thinks so too, that’s why they’re making a tablet for kids.

Sure the LeapPad won’t be as good as an iPad, but it’s only a hundred bucks, clad in tough plastic and will have over a 100 different kinds of game cartridges, books, apps and videos. I’m sure parents would love to get their kids their own tablet so mum and dad can have their iPad back.

The LeapPad comes stock with 2GB, a camera, video recorder, microphone and a 5-inch touchscreen that works with a stylus as well as a finger. $US100 when it comes out in August. [Venture Beat]

This is everything that is wrong with society today – make a proprietary kid version. Instead of teaching our kids to cook we give them pretend kitchen sets. Instead of a real second hand laptop we give them a limited functionality toy. Instead of real cameras we give them VGA resolution pink plastic. Kids are far more capable then we ever give them credit for. Real life learning and training can still be play and is empowering. And my teenagers mistreat iDevices far more than my little ones ever would.

And to think, we also give them nappies and toy cars. I’m all for my 3 year old racing home from creche in a Humvee, just cos he needs to go poo-poo…

What’s wrong with a cheap Android tablet or iPad one? Besides, they seem to respect the real ones, treating each on with a bit of care.
