Where Do You Buy Your DVDs/Blu-rays?

Gizmodo AU

The Aussie dollar is kicking butt at the moment, and plenty of geeks are taking advantage by buying stuff overseas. That said, sometimes the best deals are still available down at your local Big W. So we want to know – where do you buy your DVDs and Blu-ray movies?

With region coding on Blu-rays, I’m generally pretty careful in picking up stuff online, but ultimately the best deal generally wins out for me. Surely I’m not the only one though…

6th option. I don’t buy them. Ninja’d from the internet or rented from a video store.

overseas is still way cheaper than any place in Australia! Aussie retailers ARE NOT passing on the savings made in the high exchange rate, so why shop with them.

The retailers can’t pass on savings they don’t get from the distributors. New Releases generally cost about $27.78 plus GST. When you see those movies being sold for $20 or less on release day they are being used as loss leaders.

Noone makes money on a $19.98 New Release

The distributor would if the retailer is selling below cost to get people in the door… its the Aus distributors that I think cause the greatest price issues in this country..

I go with JB all the way. Used to use EzyDVD online, but I just love browsing JB. I usually only buy stuff thats on special though (TV shows for $16 a season). As much as I’ve wanted to take part in a blu-ray ’3 for the price of 2′ sale, there are never any good movies in there. I still download most of my tv shows, but try to buy my favourites when they become available or cheap enough.

Saying that, south park is my favourite show. I’d love to buy the box sets to support the guys but the reality is, they’re so much easier for me to watch on my computer (40″ LCD for a monitor). I know where the episodes are, when my mates come over we can easily click through and find an episode to watch. The process of trying to jump between random episodes from DVDs is just time consuming.

    So thats my story.

Amazon UK – on average they are 50% to 70% cheaper than Australian retailers & they offer free delivery for orders over 25 pounds (A$40). They are also quicker to deliver than JB HiFi Online in Australia!!!

Worth noting Amazon UK postage to Australia is now free for orders over 25 squid.

I have an addiction with just browsing the physical copies at JB. It’s always a good way to find some reduced titles or just some surprises.

However, I do occasionally get them online simply because of the price different. For instance, Shutter Island on BR hasn’t dropped below $35 since release, so I’m looking for that one at the moment. :)

I prolly shouldn’t say this but it costs what around $5.00 to rent the latest release, so I use DvdFab to rip them to my HDD and watch them at my leisure. I’m one of those people who doesn’t have any real need to keep movies on the shelf, so I generally delete them after watching, saves space on my media player.

    Amazon UK for me.

I picked up the Lost complete series box set for $140 delivered.

JB Hifi price $350, EzyDVD price $650 (Individual seasons only, they didn’t have the full price)

For the odd individual title, it’s somewhat easier to buy locally, but for box sets the savings from Amazon UK more than make up for the 5 week delivery.

I buy from CDwow.com or from 101cd.com cause it’s uber cheap. Ozgameshop.com which is UK based but trades in AUD and has all Au region has free postage and has just started stocking bluray. Seriously, I would have ozgameshop.com ‘s babies if I could. Love that website, cut my christmas budget in half.

As for buying locally, I live in rural Australia so it’s even more insane price wise. I went to Kmart at our local shops, the only place to get movies in town, to get Toy Story 3 for the kids, it was $40 Bluray, $35 on DVD. No way am I paying that.

Because of the price of blurays I’ve pretty mch stopped buying discs.

I don’t buy DVDs anymore because I have a bluray player and I don’t want to invest in inferior technology.

Forty dollars is too much for a new release bluray & by the time it gets down to thirty I get the opinion of, it’s not new, I shouldn’t have to pay thirty dollars for it.

Now I don’t buy anything till it’s fifteen dollars.

I’ve gone from buying a movie every one or two weeks to every six weeks at best.

I buy mostly from j.b. in their 3 for 2 sales they often have good films like district 9, moon, inglorious bastards etc.But unfortunately I often already have them.Sometimes I buy from U.K. online shops as they have the same region coding for blue rays and games.Right now j.b. have the spiderman trilogy on blue ray for $20, you would be lucky to get that online anywhere for less.

Prices are great, shipping time is great (3-4 days usually), and they often have free shipping to Australia for orders over £25.
