Vent Your Anger At Loud Vehicles With The Noise Snare

When a loud motorcycle woke up Mark Nesdoly’s young daughter, he decided he had enough. Instead of taking a baseball bat to the offending Harley, Nesdoly used his engineering skills to design the Noise Snare, a video detection system for loud vehicles.

The system is simple, yet effective. It uses a microphone to detect excessively loud vehicles and a video camera to record the offender as he or she drives by. Once you have video footage, you can lift an image of the driver, zoom in on his or her licence plate, or extract the audio track to prove the person’s car or motorcycle is way too loud.

All you need to do is mount the unit on a stationary object and the Noise Snare does the rest. It even connects to a wireless network and sends text messages or emails when a violation is recorded. The detection system works so well that the Canadian city of Calgary may field test the device in the upcoming months. [Gizmag]

Soon, I hope. I’m merely a pedestrian, not even the often hated cyclist or bus driver, and I’m sick and tired of hoons, speeders, people who can’t indicate and the bogans who yell and throw shit from their cars. Everytime I see a comment in the negative about revenue raising speed cameras, I’m delighted at the thought that the author has been forced to pay their dues.

While this is a good idea for private residential use. I’d hate to see the state take it up, nanny states just really scare me…

I can think of a few streets that the local bikies like to use in the middle of the night that this would work a treat on…

How will this system work in terms of its location? It only works on the basis of a sound level reaching the sensor, if a louder car is further away than a quieter one, you can get the same decibel level indication.

Obviously, measuring criteria have to be designated before this can be used on the road. I say at least 2 years away! A system has to be a lot more complex to calculate the actual sound level produced by the vehicle.

If these are installed anywhere near me, I’m fracked. My car is loud, and there’s little I can do about it.

But if you can’t guarantee a shoplifter can get caught even with video footage showing them in the act, how can this be used to catch anyone with a noisy vehicle? Won’t work here.

The RTA have had a similar setup for well over a year now southbound on Mt Ousley Road, about halfway down heading towards Wollongong.

I don’t see how this could be accurate or reliable enough to net you a fine.

Could get you a required inspection though.

Don’t mind if they do! Thinking of the end to the bogan commodores and falcons + buzzing hatchbacks in my area makes me already half excitied.

I was kinda hoping there was an optional turret attachment.

    No?

    No hard feelings.

We have same setup in South Australia, AFAIK it’s in operation on at least one major metro road.

So.. errrr… where’s the news in this?

As much as I hate excessively noisy vehicles (GovCo buses very much included), I have to disagree with the idea of the state taking this up and turning it into yet another cash register. Especially considering how easy it would be to fool these new “scientific devices” as I’m sure they’ll be labelled.

How about you just set one up and send in the rego plates to your local cop shop? Believe it or not, that does have a cumulative positive effect.

Please stop the “the guv’mnt needs to” attitude because they only stuff it up and make life worse for everyone.

To all the cotton wool people from the nanny state, your generation is so very delicate.
Learn to enjoy life, relax . Generally cars are quieter then ever, the occasional rev from an old fashioned v8
or a big motor bike and you stress out!!!

Tulipels – learn to make sense, how can people relax when cars without mufflers and doof doof drive past their house?
