The Amazing New York Paintings Made On An iPhone

Artist Jorge Colombo draws street scenes in New York using only his finger and the iPhone “Brushes” app. You might have seen his work on the cover of the New Yorker last year. In honour of his upcoming book of images of the Big Apple, here are some of his coolest cityscapes. We only wish our fingers could be so nimble.

They don’t look much better then the average high school art project. Now it’s on a iPhone and that makes it a bit harder but I don’t care how hard it was I am only interested in the end product and the end product here look novice.

I think they look pretty cool. I like the idea that you can just go anywhere pull out your phone and start painting. Makes it a lot more accessible.

Not really. Doing that sort of thing on a teeny phone screen is WAAAAY too fidley and bothersome to make the end result worth it.
Look at these- simple, rough little images that are GREAT for a smartphone (they really represent a good bit of work and skill), but pathetic in any other media.
This is more an art medium of last resort.

Impressionists did that (with paint rather than a phone) and did it better.

Travis says: ‘I don’t know art, but I know what I like’. Thankyou for sharing YOUR baseless personal opinion.

Art isn’t universal Andy it is subjective and personal. What you like I may not. In this case I don’t like these pieces of “art” as you refer to them. They look cheap and something I would see at a ‘arts ‘n crafts’ sale. You may call my opinion baseless but what accreditation do you have on this thing we call the Internet that you can prove that I care about? Your move Andy…..if that is your real name…Oh and thank you for reiterating my comment. You must make a good peon.

Exactly. If they’d seen the brushes app and how hard it is to produce art using just your fingers, then they might have more of an appreciation of how good they look.

Similar to how if you know a movie has been made with a small budget, you will praise it highly if it works out well. If the same film had been made with millions of dollars, you’d regard it as cheap looking, even if the story and subject matter were compelling.

When assessing art it certainly is subjective, but I think taking into account the technique and tools used is important in assessing the final result.
