Sony’s PlayStation Network has already been down for almost four weeks already, to the frustration of gameras around the globe. But why hasn’t Microsoft taken advantage of the ill-will currently targeted at the Japanese giant? I debate this very issue with Mark “McLeod” Serrels from Kotaku…
NICK: So Mark, as games journalism’s version of the Highlander, you understand better than most the mantra of “there can be only one”. So why is it that while Sony is languishing in a pool of its own sweat as it watches customers leave its PlayStation Network in a fury, Microsoft hasn’t launched itself at Sony’s jugular and taken the easy kill?
MARK: It’s a solid question. Microsoft seemed quite opportunistic to begin with, offering Xbox LIVE Gold for free over the first weekend, but since then? Nothing.
Sony is such an easy target and even I, with my flaccid jellyfish of a brain, can come up with a few ideas – why not sell Xbox LIVE subscriptions at half price for as long as PSN is offline? Why not package some sort of deal with new Xbox 360s sold at retail – free 12 month subscription included with every console sold? Why no clever ad campaign with a “You Get What You Pay For” slogan?
Admittedly it’s probably been too short a period for a fully fledged ad campaign, but Microsoft has been completely dead silent on the issue – you’d expect you a gloating quote from a Microsoft exec at least, but nothing.
What are your thoughts?
NICK: Everybody knows that Microsoft is a behemoth of a company, and in every behemoth it can sometimes take a long time for things to get done (Kinect voice control for Australia, anybody?). But in this particular case, I think it’s obvious that Redmond has dropped the ball.
I can understand how launching a promotion like free Xbox Live subscriptions or even bonus Microsoft points for downloading games or add-ons probably takes a bit too much preparation to effectively turn around in time, especially given the uncertainty of exactly when Sony will bring the PSN back online, but that doesn’t forgive them for not sending out daily press releases or social media jabs at Sony’s misfortunes. When you look at how Microsoft has campaigned against Apple in its PC advertising, you know that it isn’t a gentleman’s agreement to not kick an opponent in the nuts before taking its lunch money that’s stopping Microsoft from taking advantage of Sony’s misfortune.
There’s no question Sony will go on a marketing blitz when PSN goes back online to try and undo the damage. And Microsoft really should be issuing a pre-emptive strike to showcase its strengths in the online gaming market to try and nullify that campaign before it even takes off…
MARK: Well, I wonder if Microsoft’s experiences in the whole RROD situation has made them more sympathetic to a competitor in trouble? Or they don’t want to be involved in a pot/kettle situation?
It’s also possible that Microsoft are attempting to use this opportunity to take the higher ground – which is unusual for them, particularly in such a hotly contested market. There is absolutely no doubt that this is a huge opportunity for them. Xbox LIVE really is, for ‘serious’ gamers, one of, if not the, major selling point of the console.
On some level I think Microsoft is just happy to let the damaging PlayStation Network stories circulate and reap the benefits. On some level the connection between the two services is so obvious and barely needs to be made explicit. Microsoft’s woes aside, the LIVE service has been completely stellar, practically from day one, and has always sold itself on quality of service – it’s a premium product that you pay for, but works as a unified service that seems unassailable. To an extent that brand awareness is already secure – you could argue that Microsoft doesn’t want to get that brand dirty by rolling around in the dirt with Sony over this issue.
And on that note – it may be wise for Microsoft to completely distance themselves from the whole debacle lest they be thrown out with the bathwater. I may be mixing my metaphors here but, essentially the PSN situation has resulted in a huge backlash towards online services in general – a huge consumer confidence hit. It may be that Microsoft wish to avoid being mentioned in the same breath as Sony right now.
NICK: Yeah, that all makes sense, but for the same reason I like watching Animal Planet, I’d still like to see Microsoft go for the kill here, even if it’s a subtle attack.
Why we haven’t seen Microsoft partner with 3rd party titles to advertise key online games escapes me. Imagine seeing an ad for Brink, with a snippet at the end saying simply: “Play online today with Xbox 360″. It’s subtle, it’s not blatant, but with the mass media coverage of Sony’s woes, the message would still come through loud and clear.
As I said before, Sony are going to try and come back hard from this, and Microsoft should be taking advantage of any opportunity to emphasise its strengths. To sit back and let Sony struggle does them no favours.
MARK: I agree. There’s also a chance that Microsoft consider this year’s E3 to be the battleground and I’m sure they’ll throw a couple of friendly jabs in their direction then – but right now Sony is on the ropes and its legs are gone. It makes more sense to go straight for knockout blow right now.
As you just mentioned, the PSN story has hit the mainstream news with a vengeance. The mainstream, non-core audience is the one that Microsoft is currently chasing as it seeks to expand its position in the market place.
In the end, it seems they’ve been a little too passive in their approach. Surely we have to rack this up as an opportunity lost?

Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 2:23 PMXbox Live fans are already doing Microsoft’s work for them. Microsoft already pushed the boundaries by reminding everyone about the free Gold weekend in Europe right after the PSN went down, and even then Sony defenders (and some Microsoft supporters) considered it a bit tacky, like relatives divvying up grandma’s silverware right after turning off her respirator.
If Microsoft start publically exploiting this weakness they might gain some business but they’ll also really hurt their PR which is only going to make people run back to the “new and improved” PSN (which I’m how i’m sure Sony will pitch it once they finally get it running again) the next time Microsoft experiences a hiccup.
Meanwhile, people in forum discussions are bragging about how great XBL is, generally trolling the PSN community like a bunch of children… people not on Xbox Live have al ow enough oppinion of Microsoft as it is, and they haven’t even DONE anything.
They’re better off out of it.

Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 2:30 PMGuys your missing the most obvious but subtle.. (? lol) i think..
sony was taken down by a bunch of people with some amazing skills and likely large egos who think they can be the justice of the free etc… its a fine line between being vigilanties for the people and being vigilanties for the ego…
Microsoft start proclaiming things about their network and its stability and is that not just opening the door for an annonymous guest (yes attempt at a pun and a fail of course).
I think they are taking the high ground because it suits.. for all the reasons you mention but also because they just dont want to brand themselves a target (and I feel this is the majority stakeholder in the reasoning ledger).

Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 2:39 PMFirst up – Thanks Nick for bringing up Voice Activation for Australia… anyone have more info on this? Microsoft, if they are going through delays because they are adding Skype tech to the update should in turn update their website and change the ‘early 2011′ decree.
I think it is wise MS is keeping silent on the issue. It shows the maturity of the company. Plus, you may just finish dishing it out to your competitor when someone finds a hole in your own territory and screws things up for you… how would that look.
No matter what company it is, I feel for the consumer as they are the ones that will feel the pain the worst. I hope for everyone’s sake that PSN find the culprits and get up and running sooner than later.
Having said that – Xbox Rules! :)

Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 3:02 PMLets see the people who want to waste money and choose a piss poor system (designed cheap and with no cutting edge tech) already have an Xbox. Those who want a better system with Blu-ray and better graphics choose the PS3 and I get to keep a few extra dollars in my wallet. I have been on PSN since day one, so what if it goes down for a few months when I am home from college, I never spent a single dime on PSN so “I get what I pay for”! (But that is fine with me) I can not wait for the day when Xbox Live goes down for awhile and all the people who pay to play get all pissed lol!

Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 4:42 PMPoor piss system ? How are you saying that XBL is a poor piss system ? In my opinion, you’re going a bit ‘over the edge’ by saying things that directly reflect the opposition. PSN is down because of a professional group of crackers/hackers, XBL is still alive. Do you know the reason why ? Microsoft has the revenue to keep their security uptight and updated. PS3 Players get to play online for free ? Yeah that’s an advantage, but where is their revenue coming from ? PSN doesn’t get period based (1 month, 6 months, 12 months) income from letting people play online for free. So how are they going to keep their online security constantly uptight and updated ?

Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 1:54 AMYou gotta’ be kidding. I can’t believe there are people still talking that superior system nonsense. If it takes two extra years to get that superiority, it might not be worth it. And the superiority is only on a few games. Games that will eventually be visually exceeded by Xbox games. And soon the next generation starts and Sony realizes that they lost a ton of money making a system that was only slightly better, they realize Blu-ray hasn’t caught on(still less than 20% of the market) and now they will have to start charging people for PSN after getting the fanboys all riled up because it’s free. They were struggling to pay for PSN as it was. Now with all of the additional expense of actually protecting it, the cost will be passed down.
And don’t expect a new “cutting edge” system from Sony. They bled a lot of money from PS3. They won’t, and can’t afford to do that again. Contrary to what fanboys believe, Sony doesn’t have MS money.
Mr. Mike
Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 3:04 PMHa Skype! PSN has free video talk built into it! Wow Xbox is getting that too… WOW! Ha the thing that will be funny is that everyone will most likely have to pay for Skype now (since it is Microsoft and they want as much money as they can get)

Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 4:20 PMXbox has video chat too its called xbox live vision and has had it since 2006.
also Skype is free if you call Skype to Skype. If you call skype to another phone you have to pay.
Your statement is what most refer to as an ‘epic fail.’

Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 4:44 PMwow, Mr. Mike isn’t a fanboy is he?…LOL
I have all three systems. The xbox easily wins out on the online component. You do indeed get what you pay for and Live is worth every damn cent.
I like my PS3 solely for watching movies and Uncharted 2 (soon 3) and ….. that’s about it. Their complete lack of foresight and strengthening of their security will be the harbinger of many people leaving the system out to dry. I will never put my CC details in the PSN again, nor will I ever probably hook it up to the net.

Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 4:45 PMTip Mr Mike. Go to eurogamer.net and check out Digital Foundry, you’ll see which system constantly edges out the other on the game performance front, its a close race! Oh and I have a PS3 and a 360, I’m not a fanboy, that ended for me with the SNES and the Megadrive. I’m just someone who can choose the best console for each game, lucky me :)
Matt
Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 1:51 AMAnd yet EVERY PS3 exclusive game destroys every single 360 exclusive game on pretty much every category. The only reason multiplatform 360 games are ‘superior’ is because they’re made to work as best they can on the 360, then PORTED to the PS3. If the developers took some time to optimize the PS3 side, then digital fortress would be a moot point.
James
Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 3:50 PMthe PS3 still hasn’t had anything near as good as Halo yet…. still waiting……. oh I forgot to mention, that’s an exclusive. Sorry to burst your bubble there pal.
Just gotta wait for the “Halo sux” comment now, which is usually said by people who’ve never owned it and sometimes never even played it.

Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 5:29 PMWell xbox 360 has won the Console war dead line for Sony and to the ps3 sony Fa-ggots stop covering sonys a** buy saying you dont play PSN and you dont care that its offline. really grow Balls and be a man Xbox 360 for the WIN. anyways as they say. It is the first time PSN has fallen like this.
suck me Microsoft
Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 8:15 PMyea Microsoft gave 8.5 billion for skype but the way i look at it, is that its USELESS crap they don’t need they need better first party studio’s then lame ass messanger or skype video and chat apps on 360 if they wanted to give away 8.5 billion for skype then its probably best to give some of that money up for childfund.org or better yet buy a dildo and install some LED lights inside it and then sell that on the market for a small profit and i bet 100% of the user’s who use 360 or play games from it can set it on there selft and look at it every day so anytime a user looks at the HUGE dildo beside there 360 they know there money isn’t going anywhere but on useless SH!T or the user can look at the dildo and imagin having fun with it and the GLOWING LIGHTS inside.

Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 9:50 PMI think there is some basic etiquette here… it’s one thing to advertise competitively against your competitor’s product (the I’m a PC ads, for instance), but it’s quite another to take a cheap shot when they are having issues.
Neither Sony or Nintendo said anything about the RROD… you shouldn’t kick someone when they are down.

Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 10:20 PMSurely it sucks that psn has been down for half a month but what matters ultimately is games, esp exclusives. MS first party lineup is completely horrible this year, and I don’t see Kotaku or gizmodo talk about that
Jackmartini
Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 11:17 PMFirst off stop acting like Xbox live is all that. and how their making you pay makes their system better. Even they went down for weeks at one point. So obviously NO, paying does’t help. I ditched my xbox and moved to the ps3 because it really is a much better system. It pissed me off having to pay money to play games online or watch netflix. It’s greed plain and simple.
Also, Mark, you really do have a flaccid jellyfish of a brain if you actually think people will go buy a 360 simply because they cut their service price in half for a short period of time. Thank god you don’t have a job in marketing.
James
Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 12:18 PMMr Jackmartini, Mark is entitled to his own opinion, as are you. The purpose of this article was a discussion between Gizmodo and Kotaku about why Microsoft isn’t taking advantage of PSN being down. Both Mark and Nick were putting in their two cents, if you don’t agree with what he says, that’s fine and that’s your prerogative. Belittling him from having a different opinion to you just shows that you have a “flacid jellyfish of a brain” and that you are a narrow-minded tool.

Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 4:38 AMIf Microsoft has any clue on how to really capitalized would be to let everyone know they have a back-up plan for something like what is happening to Sony. Had Sony had a backup plan that they could have brought online gaming back within 2 days, we wouldn’t even be having this issue. But since it is taking PS3 nearly a month and still no online gaming, umm. You get the picture.

Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 7:40 AMWhen you think BIG companies Microsoft and Sony pretty much define that catagory. you don’t get to be that big and respected by taking cheap shots at the competition when there down. There is wining at any cost and winning with dignity. I think if the shoe was on the other foot Sony would do the same thing. I am a PSNer but I would be more apt to buy a Xbox from a compay who help the other guy when he’s down not kick him. Its a gentleman’s game and both companies beleives in respect and if nothing else karma.
