It all started Monday morning when NATO ships and helicopters patrolling the waters off Libya noticed two inflatable boats. These unusual vessels were bobbing towards Misurata, a site of fierce fighting between Gadhafi and the NATO-backed rebels. As they approached, the NATO crew discovered the boats were a ruse and promptly destroyed them with small-arms fire. Too bad they didn’t have those laser weapons on board. Watching them blow up Gadhafi’s boats Star Wars-style would have been cool. [Wired]

Gaddafi is a head of state who has historically been very friendly to the West and provided many great benefits for his people (including the largest aqueduct system for his region). Before the 2011 revolution, everyone just notched his regime up as eccentricity.
Is he a crazed dictator? Yes, but Kim Jong-Il and many others get away with a lot more.
