A survey revealed 68% percent of businesses like the idea of using a a tablet at work and the iPad is the preferred model. Less than half of the companies surveyed were using the iPad to log sales, track finances and handle paperwork. The rest of these iPad-loving companies, over 50%, have no productivity plans other than to hand them out to their employees. At least the employees will have now something to do during their next company meeting. Group Scrabble, anyone? [MaximumPC]

Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 3:05 PMSeriously, what happened to Gizmodo?! It used to do fair and even coverage but after buying a stolen iPhone and getting caught is just so lopsidedly anti Apple. I’m off to Google Reader to delete the rss feed.

Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 5:31 PMHow is this in any way a “lopsidedly anti Apple” article… I mean even if you came here, a rabid Apple fanboy, specifically looking for something anti apple in the article surely you’d be out of luck. Going to watch my fingers around Appletards from now on, god forbid I dislike the shape of the next iphone or some other such horrible anti apple crime.

Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 3:12 PMI bought for my sales team. Used correctly – a brilliant sales tool, and replaces the need for a car full of catalogues and dog eared paper pricelists. Secure enough in an App called good reader. All we have to do is place the files we want the fiald huys to have into a folder on the server and hit “sync”. Kids could do it.
Of course, being in a tech related field, clients take away the impression that we are embracing the level of tech that we preach (even though our field makes no use of an iPad directly). That alone makes it worth while – even if the iPad is just used an icebreaker in a greenfield sales call – it’s worth somthing.

Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 8:01 AMYep, and many areas also have no productivity plans for them. Its just because the boss wants one or the IT department thinks they are cool.

Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 3:50 PMDuring my stint in the State Government a certain dept spent $330,000 on iPads and iPhone 4s (and about 30 odd Sony Vaios) in a 6 month period. Mean while hardware which was falling over daily and peoples lives depend on (Public Health) was ignored and many many other things.
The amount of calls from execs we have had cause their child had dropped the iPad and needs a replacement is amazing. So these ipads were toys in the end ……..very expensive toys

Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 7:25 PMI have this gripe about my organizations it policy. The mantra is what new piece of candy can we provide our users? The reality is that without properly thinking through and discussing with end users How technology will be used money is just wasted. Knowing and understanding how it will be used in the enterprise space is crucial as fundamentally it is an entertainment device. I know for what I do it would be a compromised solution compared to other options(eg W7), but I couldn’t possibly see My company going past the glossy brochures. Still would love to have one though. Jealous of those who do!

Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 8:26 PMdammit – Where is your source?!!! MaximumPC’s source is “a recent survey” with no other information. Gah, why is gizmodo so tacky; seriosuly why would you re-report a study without seeing the study? In fact where is the study? Was there even a study? Did Brad Chacos from MaximumPC just make this up? There certainly doesn’t seem to be any obvious proof otherwise. Frick! Nothing like a good piece of well researched journalism.

Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 8:52 PMHi Dan,
Here’s a link for the report from Dimensional Research. It must have been accidentally left out when my editor uploaded the article. Other websites reported on the news as well (with a slightly different slant, sure), so there was plenty of proof and research out there to be had on the topic, even if the link was erroneously missing from my article.

Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 7:33 PMI imagine for many, it’s an inter-department thing where they HAVE to spend their surplus allocated budget or risk having a reduced one the following year, so they blow it all on expensive stupid shit like this.
