OK, internet – I’m not going to let you break my heart again. I know this is almost certainly fake – the product of a CGI firm. But even so, it’s beautiful and amazing, and you can’t rob me of that.
The video, by effects studio Physalia, shows a bag full of colourful balls brought to life by a giant electromagnet. Think of the nouns involved in that sentence! Colourful balls! Electromagnet! The video is extremely life-affirming, despite the fact that it’s certainly completely faked. Sort of like the internet itself, I suppose. Oh well. At least it’s not a viral campaign for soap, or something. [Physalia via Reddit]

Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 7:15 PMWonder what the little circuit board is that she is putting into the ball, if its some sort of radio controlled electro magnet then i guess that this effect can sorta be created but i really have no idea if its real or not

Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 8:13 PMIf that’s the case, then that larger magnet (I suppose we’d call the controller magnet) would have to be at a very low voltage… Hey, would so many little electromagnets being active at one time cause disruption with radio signals?

no balls

Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 7:06 PMYup, one of the people or groups that worked on it: http://www.grrddh.com/ -Specialises in 3D effects etc.
It would be wonderful if they could do this for real though. I suppose the biggest clue in the vid is that the collest part (the floating balls) is the shortest, whereas if they could do that for real then it would’ve taken up most of the whole vid. That’s the way people tend to do those things.
Anyway, grrddh did a great job at making the effects look real. Very convincing animation!
