The dicey task of extracting tens of thousands of litres of water – two million times as radioactive as the stuff poured into the Pacific – has begun. It’s unclear where exactly this water is headed, but removing it is crucial.
The highly dangerous water will be removed in order to make room for – drumroll – more radioactive water, with the ultimate goal being a recycling rig that can clean and cool water before sending it back over the plant’s scalding fuel rods, precluding the need for more and more accumulation. Keep your fingers crossed. [NYT and Kyodo News]
