HAVE YOU CHECKED YOUR ROUTER? IS IT ON FIRE? ARE YOU SURE? CHECK IT AGAIN. ARE YOU SURE IT’S STILL NOT ON FIRE? CHECK AGAIN. Actually, just buy Dr Cool, a dedicated router cooler that solves a problem nobody has.
Evercool’s completely superfluous router accessory will keep your scalding hot flameball of IP death from burning down your house and killing everyone you know and love in a terrible fire, through a single 8cm fan, and… well, it looks like just the fan. A small fan that will probably make a whiny noise.
So, if you keep your router under several thick rugs, inside a running oven, or point several powerful spotlights on it, this dinky stupid thing may slightly prolong its life. [Evercool via MaxPC]

Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 8:19 AMActually, this is a great idea. I have a netgear router, only 2 years old, behind my couch. It has a bout 2cms breathing room each side (its standing up) but I have no wi-fi because the chip overheats after about 2 mins.

Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 9:58 AMI agree. My Netcomm router gets extremely hot. It sits on top of an external hard drive which also gets very warm. In summer it can get so hot it resets itself back to factory settings. To try and get some airflow over it, I sit it on top of two plastic soap dishes (the kind that have spikes). I’ve even thought about wiring a spare pc fan up to a USB cable to try and force some air through it.

Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 10:17 AMThe cheap and nasty billion router iinet supplied a few years ago has chronic overheating problems, mostly due to the fact it’s only vents are on the underside. We resolved the issue by placing the router on a cake cooling rack – about $2 from the nearest woolies
