The Adler Planetarium just renovated the Grainger Sky Theater with a big honking screen. The display will mimic being in space with a 8000 by 8000 pixel screen that’s supposed to deliver “the largest single seamless digital image in the world”. For reference, typical movie screens ‘only’ spit out 2000 by 4000 pixel images.
The screen will be housed in the planetarium’s iconic dome and will create a 360-degree experience through special lighting, 20 separate projectors and 45 computers. The Adler Planetarium will be showing off ‘Deep Space Adventure’ on the screen, which will take viewers on a trip through our universe with images will be “as good as the human eye can perceive”. Guess I know where I’ll be the next time I head to Chicago.
The theatre is slated to open on July 8. [Adler Planetarium]
