Despite telling the world that it wouldn’t happen, Sony Ericsson has changed its tune, announcing that the ageing Xperia X10 will in fact be getting an update to Gingerbread.
In a global announcement last Friday night, Sony Ericsson confirmed that generic X10 handsets would get the Gingerbread update in the middle of the year, either end of Q2 or early Q3.
That said, there’s no guarantee that the carriers will rush the updates out to local X10 owners, but it’s good to see that Sony Ericsson is seeming to take its new philosophy of ensuring its handsets have the latest software seriously.

Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 11:44 AMFinally SE have listened to their loyal customers… Although half of us have already got Gingerbread thanks to XDA Developers.
It’s also good to see that SE have realised we don’t want their stupid and useless customisations; we just want full functionality, as offered by the latest version of Android.
With this move I will definitely consider buying SE again, whereas before this announcement, it was a NO WAY from me and countless others.

Friday, April 22, 2011 at 6:55 AMHaving never received the 2.1 update off 3 it is a moot point anyway. The mistake I made was assuming that 3 would pass on the update. Next time I will get a phone with a recent version.

Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 11:58 AMIsnt the question whether the carriers will actually pass on this update to their customers? If Vodafail, Optus etc get in the way with their “extensive testing” and implant their crap apps before releasing the firmware update to their customers, then good chance that these updates wont make their way to Australian shores. Most telco’s wont invest the time and money to test these updates for the handful that care to update their phone to Gingerbread me thinks.

Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 5:05 PMNo doubt XDA will, but of those handful that want to upgrade, how many will bother going through the someone threatening process of an upgrade via the instructions posted on XDA? I’ve seen them for the ROM’s that are released for SGS and even Im scared of upgrading my phone from 2.2 to 2.2.1 or above.
