Virtual windows are nothing new, but the design team at CHC believes that they can make it both affordable and accessible by taking advantage of some of the iPad 2′s new features.
While still in the concept stage, the design team at CHC believe that they can use the new iPad’s front facing camera, A5 processor and a dedicated app to track faces of people walking past, which can then be used to move the image in the iPad to create the illusion of a moving background.
And by taking that to the next level, it could become a videoconferencing powerhouse by allowing two virtual window users to converse with each other from across the world as though they were simply looking through a window.
It’s a pretty cool concept, even if it probably won’t get much past the concept stage.

Monday, March 7, 2011 at 10:31 AMSee, now THAT’s clever.
Good to see some stories about ipads that are actually about ipad’s abilities.
Not just things you could use any old lcd for

Monday, March 7, 2011 at 11:17 AMUm, no.
You could use any old LCD and a camera… in fact you could probably already use your old CRT and Xbox Kinect

Monday, March 7, 2011 at 12:21 PMThe video even mentions that it can be done with other equipment, but that’s not the point.
It’s the simplicity and elegance of using iPads which makes this a cool concept.

Monday, March 7, 2011 at 11:00 AMWow. I mean just Wow. How can anyone believe this is that great? It’s called Video Conferencing!!! And most cost effective??? 4 x iPad 2 ~= $2000. A $200 laptop and 20 inch tv ) can do the same thing for quarter of the price (and that is buying a Nice TV/monitor). I really wonder why people think you can insert the name of an Apple product and it instantly makes things the greatest thing ever.

Monday, March 7, 2011 at 12:56 PMMy company had video conferencing 5 or even 7 years ago. How is this news just because an iPad can now do it. Wouldn’t it be miles better using one of those razor edge LCD screens anyway?
What’s next? “OMG iPAD can now has voice recognition, MAGIC” erm hasn’t windows had that for the last decade or two? Hell my Philips Genie from 1998 had voice activated dialing…

Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 1:16 AMits nice to see that the Apple marketing promotional spray can leak onto other, generally good ideas.
“I have a great idea!”
“no one will care and it will tragically be lost forever”
“…”
“I have a great idea… that involves the latest Apple product!”
“WHERE DO I INSERT MY MONEY!!!”
perhaps… a necessary evil?
