It’s been a few years since I’ve been camping, but I know how useful a gadget like this could be. The Peg-it from Aussie inventor Ross Merkel lets campers easily hammer in pegs in tough soil without breaking fingers or bending pegs.
Originally appearing on The New Inventors last August, the Peg-It is now a real product, available for $40. Essentially it’s a cleverly designed tube that allows you to insert a peg, hammer down on the peg precisely without risking your fingers, and then remove the peg from the ground effortlessly when you’re striking your tent at the end of your stay.
For $40, this is a bargain for anyone who spends time camping.

Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 3:15 PMSomehow that guy sounded more Aussie than most, unless its just cos im used to hearing american accents on youtube. While this device could be useful, I agree with Harry that if you just focus on what you’re doing, you’ll be fine.

Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 3:45 PMA seasoned camping buddy of mine put me onto a much better system a few years ago. Use old screwdrivers. They already have a large head to hold onto and hit, they are much stronger than the flimsy pegs you get with your tent, and they have a handle for easy removing. Only downside is they do stick out a bit so they can trip you up if you aren’t looking where you are going. Oh, and obviously a little more heavy and bulky so maybe not what you want if backpacking.
Even if you don’t have any spare old ones to use, you can usually pick them up at garage sales for a dollar or two.

Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 10:18 PMFor starters, don’t use a claw hammer, get a mallet. Secondly, don’t use the crappy pegs that come with most cheap arse tents, get decent steel ones. Lastly, those decent pegs wedged under a stuck peg and malleted sideways… pop, up comes peg.
25 years of camping and all I can think is that the best use of that $40 is on a case of piss.

Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at 1:17 PMha, l’ve camped for years, never pegged down the tent – once you have esky, air mattress and bags in it doesn’t move.

Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at 1:37 PMA hell of a lot of steps to take.
So a clumsy person, who does often hit themselves with a hammer, is supposed to remember and apply these steps in order as instructed?
Good luck.
Mind you I think you could open a beer with one end of it so its not a total loss.
