Northwestern Scientists Massage Qubits Into Working Better With The Internet

How about the qubit, huh? All quantum and two-faced and potentially paradigm-shifting the way we approach computing. It’s amazing! Also amazing: What Northwestern University researchers claimed to have done with it in a fiber-optic cable.

Basically, the researchers have discovered a way to route a “photon qubit” through fibre-optics without any physical loss to the qubit itself. Fascinating! A custom switch handles the the load, and ultimately would be part of a system that allow fibre-optic cables to share multiple user’s information simultaneously.

So, potentially a super-fast network between multiple users at opposite ends of the Earth in about a second flat. Aarriving this week, right? [Physical Review Letters via Engadget]
