Watch Stephen Colbert Smack Down The Daily

You just buy the app and you get all the convenience of using your iPad to read the news online, but without the internet’s annoying habit of being completely free. And that’s just for starters.

Colbert takes on The Daily for being essentially worthless, both for its editorial vision (old dogs! rich South Dakotans!) and, you know, its entire mode of being. And while The Daily hasn’t been around long enough to say that Colbert’s right… well, he’s not exactly wrong.

One quick note, to take or leave as you will: this smackdown comes just when Colbert is appearing on the cover of that other international billionaire media mogul’s iPad-only magazine, The Project, but Branson gets off clean. I’m not sayin’, I’m just sayin’. [Colbert Report]

The following was my impression of The Daily. I Thought I would post it here as Apple chose not to post it in their App Store.

Let’s say my 1/5 rating is a 2/10. There’s really only two things right with this thing. 1. The price and 2. The graphics.

    The 8 wrong:

    1. Stability
    2. Speed
    3. The carousel
    4. The ads
    5. The content
    6. Interaction
    7. The sections
    8. The name

    1. It crashes (even after update). Sometimes I have to load it twice or three times to get to the front cover. I don’t mind waiting for it “to be delivered” in fact I quite like the idea, but crashing is no fun. And telling me it’s being delivered when I’ve already opened it once seems like more time wasting.
    2. Speed. Lag time when spinning the carousel is not acceptable.
    3. The carousel might look ok but functionally it’s a no from me. I would like to see an indication of the thickness of the paper. You can tell straight away if it’s a slow news day. Scrap this whole concept and try again. There’s too much wasted screen space with it too. And the buttons below the bar are just a bit ugly.
    4. The ads might be fun the very first time but after that they are just annoying, slow to load and bog down the experience. The good thing is you learn as soon as you see a loading symbol, it’s time to flick the page.
    5. The content is lightweight. If we are going to pay for journalism, then lets not dedicate a whole section to gossip and apps. Of course I wouldn’t even consider buying this without local content. Also, the content needs to be fresher than morning dew. There’s some items I saw weeks ago on blogs. If that’s your competition then you need to be up before the sparrow tweets his f#rt.
    6. Interaction. Please don’t force me to turn the page to read the story. I skip those stories because I can’t be bothered. It’s a cute idea, but give me choice.
    7. As stated earlier in content, do we need a whole tab for gossip? This saddens me. Next is apps and games? If this newspaper is my life and 30% is gossip and games, then I hereby apologise to my forefathers for what I have become.
    8. The name. Whilst I like the name, this is 2011 and daily may as well be yearly. They should have called it The Minutely, or just The Minute. The beauty of the blog is the pace at which information streams. Today’s news is old news. I want this minute’s news.
