There’s no fake paper money anymore, everything is stored on a bank card. There’s no more dice rolling, you cover your dice and the tower will electronically roll for you (complete with sound!). It knows exactly where your piece should go because the tower “bathes the board in infrared light, and a camera can see reflectors placed on each game piece”. The new version of Monopoly also has some new games like a horse race, auctions, a gas tax and the option to upgrade your utilities so they are green. Monopoly Live is supposed to cost $US50 in late 2011. I’m not sure if I’ll be ready for it. [NY Times]

Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 8:39 AMHopefully it’s better then the Here and Now edition of Monopoly, those “credit cards” are a pain in the ass to use, it much quicker and easier to just use cash.

Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 10:04 AMI prefer my Monopoly to be ‘off the grid’, not controlled by Cyberdyne Systems.
No fate but what we make, man.

Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 10:09 AMThey’re taking away all the fun! You know, quickly rolling the dice so the player before you doesn’t have a chance to yell “Rent!”, rule variations (such as money from Free parking) and the barter & trade of properties.
I’ll stick to the tradition fight-causing game, thank you very much :)

Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 9:49 PMI don’t blame them. Hardly anyone plays (or purchases) board games anymore. Monopoly’s moved to consoles and phones already, but they still feel they need the ‘core’ experience. I just don’t think tacking on a computer will solve a goddamn thing though.
