Meet Gizmodo’s Guest Artist: The Legendary Robert Grossman

Robert Grossman is an illustrator, painter, sculptor, Academy Award nominated filmmaker, cartoonist, author – and yes, the creator of the iconic AIRPLANE! poster. We’re honoured to have this legendary illustrator as our Gizmodo Guest Artist this month.

Before creating countless illustrations for many major national publications, children’s books and album covers, Grossman spent his days studying art under the guidance of his father, display artist Joseph Grossman. He then attended Saturday morning art classes at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and later went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts at Yale University. Once his education and a stint as the editor of The Yale Record were completed, Grossman’s impressive fifty year career truly began.

Even if you didn’t recognise Robert Grossman by name, you’ve probably seen one of his many illustrations.

If you’ve read TIME, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Esquire, TV Guide, Sports Illustrated, The Times, The Nation, The New York Observer, The Atlantic Monthly, The New Republic, Evergreen Review, New York magazine, National Lampoon and The New York Times in the past years, odds are that you’ve looked at a cover created, a feature splash or a cartoon by Grossman.

Seen Rolling Stone‘s poster series with images of George W. Bush, Richard Nixon, Bob Dylan, The Who, Jerry Garcia, and Crosby Stills and Nash? Grossman created them.

Giggled over comics in New York magazine, The Nation, The New Yorker, or The New York Observer? Then you may have seen something written and drawn by Grossman.

Check out his website for a look at recent work or read through his Wikipedia entry if you want to learn even more about the man.

Oh, and don’t forget to properly welcome him in the comments!
