Welcome to Whitenoise, the new community forum section of Giz AU. This is where you can come to talk about anything you want with other Gizmodo readers.
You can discuss anything at all here in Whitenoise, from your unnatural fear of dentists to the NBN and everything in between (and beyond). As always, we want intelligent discussion, not douchebaggery, so the only condition is that you keep it civil.
So go on. Create some whitenoise by commenting below…

Monday, January 24, 2011 at 8:21 AMQuestion: Why can’t we have accounts on AU Giz and Ko like we do on your big brother sites (apart from the whole compromised security thing)? I mainly read the US versions so I can jump from io9 to Ko to Giz and comment at will.
Seamus Byrne
Monday, January 24, 2011 at 10:02 AMWe do have plans to build in a member system this year. A couple of other milestones to pass first, but it looks like it should be part of the first half of the year.

Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 9:51 PMPlease make it different to the US Gawker “ive got a star so my comments are more important then yours” system.
Nick Broughall
Monday, January 24, 2011 at 10:02 AMEssentially it’s because we have a different CMS to the US. We’re in the process of redesigning the Allure sites and I know that memberships is something that we’re actively working on.
You just have to remember that we’re a much smaller team than the US, so these things take a little bit more time. But do feel free to let us know any features you’d like us to add and we’ll take the suggestions on board!

Monday, January 24, 2011 at 5:42 PMThis is a good thing Nick. Even apart from security concerns, I hate the Giz US system.

Monday, January 24, 2011 at 7:22 PMThanks for the replies…
I know it’s not a biggie and understand that you guys are a smaller operation. However , I often feel the community on the AU sites is more friendly and helpful and having accounts would, IMO, help foster this.

Monday, January 24, 2011 at 8:25 AMoo oo Question 2:
If Whitenoise takes off will there be an easy link on the frontpage and if it really takes off, any chance of a full fledged forum?
Nodeity
Monday, January 24, 2011 at 9:54 AMYeah,.. I agree, hopefully it won’t be half assed cos I regularly have tech questions, so “seperate topics” would be good too. :)

Monday, January 24, 2011 at 10:03 AMWe’ll see how we go :) Let’s just focus on seeing Whitenoise take off first :)

Monday, January 24, 2011 at 11:05 AMI was hoping the whitenoise image might have been a cool 3D stereogram, but I see nothing :-(

Monday, January 24, 2011 at 11:19 AMMaybe you’re not trying hard enough? :)

Monday, January 24, 2011 at 7:28 PMShouldn’t be to hard to whack a 3D “G” in there…or even turn it into one of those QR codes

Monday, January 24, 2011 at 11:31 AMThis forum would gain structure and stability if you plugged the antenna in…

Monday, January 24, 2011 at 11:48 AMUm, where is the whitenoise forum?
Nick Broughall
Monday, January 24, 2011 at 12:09 PMYou’re in it. Comment on anything you want here and converse with other Gizmodians :)
Sam
Monday, January 24, 2011 at 12:21 PMMaybe you could have a subject of the day to get people started, but don’t necessarily have to follow. It’s kind of hard starting a topic on nothing.
Casey Glass
Monday, January 24, 2011 at 1:22 PMhuh? you’ve given a name to your blog posts commenting section and decided that is a “forum”?
sure, its a place for discussion – but its topics are completely driven by what articles have been published. blog posts comments == forum.
Nick Broughall
Monday, January 24, 2011 at 1:30 PMI think you’re missing the point. Obviously each post has comments below it for commenting on said article. This is a weekly post with the sole purpose of trying to create a sense of community among readers, where they can talk about anything, whether we’ve written about it or not.
Just because we’re not using phpBB or similar software to run it (at this point, not ruling it out for the future) doesn’t make it a less valid forum for discussion among a community. It happens to work exceptionally well over at Kotaku.
Sam
Monday, January 24, 2011 at 4:19 PMIf this is weekly, is there some way it can be stuck to the first page. It’ll get lost half a day after it’s posted otherwise, making it pretty useless.
Nick Broughall
Monday, January 24, 2011 at 4:25 PMWe’ll be pushing it back up to the front page at 8am every morning, so it should never drift too far away from the home page.
Matt
Monday, January 24, 2011 at 1:38 PMI’m confused too. These comments constitute the white noise forum?

Monday, January 24, 2011 at 1:40 PMAre you planning to bring out a specific Giz iPhone app? The current one is a bit buggy.
Nick Broughall
Monday, January 24, 2011 at 1:55 PMItr’s something I’d love to do, but we need to focus on the site as our number one priority. As I’ve mentioned, there’s a redesign coming and a heap of new features we’re working on, and when we’ve got the main site exactly where we want it to be, we’ll start looking at mobile apps.

Monday, January 24, 2011 at 2:49 PMYou might want to reverse the post order so we don’t have to drill down to the last post added!! :)

Monday, January 24, 2011 at 4:17 PMOh god, I hate forums that do that. It means when I first go there, I have to start at the bottom and read upwards going against all my built in instincts (and the majority of other forums out there).
Seamus Byrne
Monday, January 24, 2011 at 3:14 PMIf you’re still confused, this is kind of like the ‘Talk Amongst Yourselves’ post over on Kotaku.
http://www.kotaku.com.au/2011/01/talk-amongst-yourselves-96/
It’s a place for regular readers to chat about whatever tech (or off-topic) thoughts they want to share with each other. Thus the de facto forum status.

Monday, January 24, 2011 at 7:33 PMYep , get the idea…Like it even…but I think one fatal flaw may be, and correct me if I’m wrong, you can’t seem to reply to replies. That may make flowing QA and response hard.

Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 10:50 AMYeah guys, this needs to become a full-fledged forum STAT. I generally like the commenters on giz AU and we need a place where we can grow as a community
Josh
Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 11:00 AMGood idea Giz. Hope it takes off. Anyway, here’s my question. Do you think that Google will ever remove carriers from the equation with regards to android updates? Take the galaxy s for example. First of all, it took samsung so long to release the froyo update, and then the carriers, one by one, took their time to customize the fw with useless widgets and apps. this is frustrating for the end user to have to wait so long.
Then again, Google doesn’t really have an incentive In doing this. Carriers like to personalize their phones with services and apps which will make them more money. At their roots, Google is an advertising company and they want to make as much money as possible. So carriers will likely pick android, google will get more money,so it’s a win for google, a win for the carriers, but a loss for the consumer. right?
What do you guys think?
Seamus Byrne
Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 5:27 PMI’ve heard mixed reports on this. On one hand, yes, Android might get a more direct update process integrated into a future update. But then we see Honeycomb starting to demo and there doesn’t seem to be any promise of anything there.
I think we’re seeing the blessing/curse of Android. It’s ‘open’, but only for actual phone makers. If you don’t root your phone, you can expect to face controls from both the maker and the telco. And that factor I don’t see changing much in the foreseeable future?

Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 12:00 PMFaster moderation of comments, or no moderation of comments would be awesome. Use Logins, and let the users police each other, raise a claim, 3 strikes and it’ll become investigated. This will save u guys time reading every comment (Unless u like that, which is cool)
Seamus Byrne
Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 5:24 PMYeah, we’re definitely looking at more advanced comment systems as part of the redesign process we’re about to go through. So feedback like this is useful. Cheers.

Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 4:22 PMQuestion: Did the 10 billion app store downloads include app updates?
Seamus Byrne
Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 9:08 AMGood question. There’d definitely be a lot of updates in there if they were counting EVERY download. Might see what we can find out… probably not much given Apple’s general lack of communication outside of press releases.

Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 10:22 PMThere’s been a few articles on here and Lifehacker about Hulu and a channel 9 deal.
Have got confirmation from Hulu themselves that they’re looking at bringing Hulu to other countries like Australia:
We are actively exploring opportunities to launch our service in multiple countries around the globe and due to the confidential nature of those discussions I am afraid we can’t comment on individual markets.
This came from Hulu’s own Simon Gallagher who is their director of international business development.
I wonder why this hasn’t been reported on yet
Nick Broughall
Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 4:47 AMWe reported February last year that Hulu considers Australia to be in its top 10 regions to expand into: http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2010/02/australia-in-the-top-10-markets-for-hulu-expansion.
A.a. Fussy
Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 7:51 PMThanks Nick-what I heard from Hulu themselves backs up claims Australia top 10 regions to expand into.
They couldn’t say exactly if Australia was being considered, as discussions for expansion to other countries are confidential.

Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 8:37 AMHow was everyone’s Australia day? Did anyone get up to anything geeky? I spent the day at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney with the family, so went the low-tech option. Did get a little sunburnt, and kind of enjoyed playing around with Instagram though…

Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 10:50 AMThanks Editor Nick!! Australia Day was splendid. Not as good as yours. Every sporting team/player I wanted to win . . . well? . . . the truth is . . . they lost, Nick . . . they lost. Plain and simple. And when they lose, I lose. It was late into the night when i realised what to do. I needed a bubble bath >
http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lbu9r2gByw1qe0eclo1_500.gif > It was fun & just the tonic for a hard day at the track.
Fun is important. Heck – I don’t need to tell you – Fun is fun.
I think White Noise is supposed to be fun?? Everyone still remembers fun, right?
For example: pushing girlfriend into swimming pool while she is carrying plate of watermelon to guests is f-u-n spells FUN-!!! (totally not “douche-baggery” as she [and possibly Seamus] would have you believe.)
Can’t think of something to talk about? Didn’t Jerry Seinfeld write an entire television series about nothing? Look at Snooki [not for too long] she has nothing valuable to say and she’s on the New York Times best seller list! See. It’s easy. Anybody can do it. Look at me! I’m 100 per cent unemployable. I look up to people like Snooki [obviously not literally, I'm quite tall]. You know what to do! Be all you can be!
Included is a little motivational video I like to watch when all seems lost and i haven’t changed out of my bathrobe for 2 months. Translation: i watch it everyday & the words he says makes me feel good -!!! Good doesn’t mind; he like it when I watch the video. Boom-tish! Thank you. You’ve been a great audience. I’ll be here all week. A special thanks Snooki, you’ve been a great sport & don’t forget to try the veal. THE END IS CLOSEST TO THE BEGINNING!
Watch the video. Be inspired. Write!

Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 1:36 PMI’d like to see an improvement to Gizmodo which shows articles in the order that they are published, not (what seems to be) the date they were written.
I might check Giz out at one time and see articles in order A,B,C,D, but then later on I’ll notice article Z and Y have been added to make A,Z,B,C,Y,D. it’s very frustrating and its not uncommon for me to notice several new articles in amongst articles I’ve already read.

Friday, January 28, 2011 at 8:24 AMTotally agree with this, so annoying for trying to find which articles you’ve read and which ones you haven’t.
I think it comes from when the US feed gets pulled in. The aussie stories get mixed throughout.

Friday, January 28, 2011 at 8:50 AMWe usually publish articles in chronological order (oldest to newest), but if there’s an important or time-sensitive article, we’ll prioritise that over, say, a YouTube video of a cat doing something funny.
The best way to make sure you don’t miss an article is to subscribe to our RSS feed.

Friday, January 28, 2011 at 9:26 AMDear Elly,
this is most disappointing. I have noticed a distinct lack of LOL Youtube cat videos at Gizmodo in recent times; at least now i know who to blame. Gizmodo used to be my go-to site for feline hilarity and hijinks. It is disappointing to see tech news & culture has taken precedence over feline humour and its associated lifestyle, politics, culture & philosophies: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Bmhjf0rKe8

Friday, January 28, 2011 at 10:21 AMI dont see the reasoning for publishing new (to giz.au) articles behind older articles. Perhaps there is a technical reason which prevents this (rather than just the order you get to stuff, I know you guys are busy!), but personally I’d prefer to just see articles in the order which you guys post them. Surely Giz Australia is enough of its own entity to be able to publish things in its own unique order without having to adhere to the US timeline?
(Yes, I am mildly passionate about missing just 1 Giz article!)

Friday, January 28, 2011 at 10:42 AMYeah, fair enough. That’s not too difficult. I guess you can say request accepted? :)

Friday, January 28, 2011 at 9:01 AMWow! Just wow! Shamwow in fact. Another late night fellow travellers. A restless sleep after watching inception. Who were the dreamers for the different levels. The spinning top? Cobb’s reality as dream? So many questions. I really must be some kind of knucklehead to have missed so many clues, details, etc.
But things look good here though. I trust everyone is having fun? Everything seems to coming along nicely.
I went to the Social Network yesterday – kid you not – i was the only person in the cinema. Is that the best thing in the world? I’m pretty sure it is. No kidding – it was the best day of my life and this is coming from a guy who used to own 3 Hypercolor shirts; let just say: i’ve seen some pretty wild, colour changing times.
But, another day, another dollar as they say. Stiff upper-lip and the all that malarky. I guess everybody has big plans for the weekend? Yes/no? My weekend involves scuba diving & sailing just like in James Bond! Actually I’m scraping all the crap of the hull of my cousin’s sailboat. But you know how it is – family is family & you do what you gotta do. So, Yeah, Living the dream . . . one day at a time i guess?
