Windows on a tablet is crap. But the Samsung Sliding PC 7 Series is the exception that proves the rule. Mostly because it has a slide out qwerty keyboard, transforming it from tablet to laptop in seconds.
Powered by the upcoming Oaktrail Atom processor, the tablet-cum-laptop offers a 10.1-inch multitouch 1366×768 screen, 32GB or 64GB of SSD storage and Windows 7. There are USB and HDMI outputs via a dongle, and an eight hour battery life (reportedly).
Samsung will preload the tablet with apps to make it usable as a tablet, and it will come with Office 2010 Starter edition pre-installed when it launches in the US in March (not sure on Aussie release dates yet). As you’d expect, there’s still no word on pricing.

be interesting to see how dimensions and weight compare to the ipad (because if you ask me, the ipad is already on the max limit when it comes to weight)
also, its probably a bit too powerful, the ipad is powerful enough. and I worry about price. especially after the galaxy tab…

Friday, January 7, 2011 at 3:12 AMSo I take it you hammered out that reply on the touchscreen keyboard on your iPad? No!?
There is a real demand for actual PRACTICAL devices that can serve as more than a web browser and e-mail reader. A.K.A. not a large phone.
US$699 seems pretty damn reasonable with Office pre-installed, an Oak Trail processor, 1366 x 768 10.1″ capacitive touchscreen and a nine hour battery life. I’ll also bet you that it’s a lot less heavy than the iPad AND laptop that you also have to carry because you still need it to get anything actually PRODUCTIVE done.
Youssir are stuck in the reality distortion field. It seems to happen a lot to people easily impressioned by marketing.

LEARN TO READ!
“been saying for ages that that idea is my perfect tablet.”
seriously… WTF!?
when I said the ipad is powerful enough, I meant that it’s HARDWARE is powerful enough. I was not talking about its feature set.
there was no mention of price: $699 does seem reasonable if it translates favourably to AUD$.
but it still remains fairly important that it be light weight, preferably no heavier than the ipad! why? because there have already been TONNES of tablet PCs that have come out! for YEARS! obviously for us to have any interest in this it has to be different. and the key difference for me would be that it shared similar dimensions to the ipad! why? because most of the point of the tablet form factor is that it’s easy to whip out and just use, or pass around.
A laptop is something that is meant to be used as a plant object, but can transform to become mobile. a tablet is meant to be always moving around. say like… A desktop is a house, a laptop is a tent, a tablet is a golf umbrella, a smartphone is one of those cheap ultra foldy umbrellas that can fit in your handbag, work in a pinch, but suck at REALLY keeping you dry. (I’m in QLD, you’ll have to forgive the random rain analogy).
obviously for the same reason it is important that it have a really good ‘standby’ feature like the ipad.
anyway, I agree with everything you say about the iPad! its EXACTLY what I’ve been saying since the iPad came out!!

Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 5:07 PMIt’s fine that you don’t like it, but please, just tell us what’s good about something and what’s bad.
Not that it is instantly crap, without naming why it is so crap. I get that Windows isn’t that great on a tablet but some people do need Windows programs with them without having to carry around their laptop.

Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 6:45 PMAgree completely! I need windows applications, but not to the extent of a laptop. Thanks for telling giz what some of their readers are thinking when they publish their opinionated reviews :)

Friday, January 7, 2011 at 5:30 AMi also agree with your statement, I use a libretto for my Portable solution and i love it (its poorly designed and they need to fire the engineers that designed it because they are fucken idiots with CPU placement on the mainboard for starters nvm the rest of the issues i found. But i love my libretto and i take offence to gizmodo feeling they can decide whats good and whats not. Tech Savvy people want unbaised reviews.
