By jumping ship to AMD Fusion guts for their Pavilion dm1 laptop, HP is in the vanguard of manufacturers turning out netbook-sized PCs with full notebook performance. That means 1080p video and DirectX 11 graphics on an 11.6-inch machine.
The dm1 measures less than an inch thick and claims nearly ten hours of battery life—both traits you’d expect of a typical netbook. But unlike its Atom-powered brethren, it can actually churn through streaming 1080p content without a hitch. It supports up to 8GB RAM and ships with a 320GB HD. Also standard on the dm1 3 USB 2.0, 1VGA, and 1 HDMI port. And a certain thrill at knowing you’d actually be able to use HDMI.
Let’s not get too carried away; the dm1 still feels oddly heavy despite its listed 3.5 pound weight, and the processor speed is still just 1.6GHz. But the graphics capabilities alone are a promising sign of what’s to come for ultraportable, Fusion-powered devices.
Across the rest of its laptop line, HP upgraded its HP Envy 17 and Pavilion models to second-generation Intel Core processors. The Envy also gained HP’s proprietary CoolSense cooling technology, while Pavilion desktop PCs add bass-thumping Beats Audio speakers.
The Pavilion dm1 will be available in the US January 9th for $US450, with the updated Pavilion notebooks available the same day starting at $US900 for the dv6. And the Envy 17 update? “Soon.”

HP brings increased power and Beats Audio to Pavilion lines
Future second-generation Intel Core processors and AMD Radeon graphics technology will be included on the HP Pavilion dv6 and dv7 notebook PCs and the HP Pavilion p6700, Slimline s5700 and Elite HPE-500 series desktop PCs. Select models of the HP Pavilion, Slimline and Elite HPE-series desktop PCs also will include HP’s Multi-Display Capable technology. This new feature allows users to expand programs, run several applications or enjoy a more intense gaming experience on side-by-side monitors.
The new HP Pavilion desktop PCs also will feature Beats Audio, which was created by Beats by Dr. Dre co-founders Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine to restore the emotion that is missing from digital music. Working in collaboration with HP, Iovine and Dr. Dre tuned and applied the signature Beats sound profile across HP’s premium notebook and desktop lines to provide the optimal sound experience – the way the artist intended it – when playing music or audio through headphones or external speakers.
This year, most HP consumer desktops, laptops and minis are expected to ship with free 60-day Norton Internet Security(7) protection. Powered by an Intel Atom processor, the affordable companion PC is less than 1- inch thin, comes standard with an inline six-cell battery and provides up to 10.75 hours of battery life.(2) It features a fashionable design and sleek HP Imprint finish also available in charcoal, lavender frost, luminous rose and ocean drive.
