WWF Is A New Green File Format That’s Impossible To Print

The rabble rousers at the World Wildlife Fund (they renamed fake wrestling!) have created a new, PDF-type file format called WWF. It’s a file format that CANNOT be printed out. The idea: save as WWF, save a tree.

Here’s a video telling us about all the trees we kill with PDF (but more seriously, a non-print file is admittedly an interesting idea):

WWF is currently only savable and readable on Mac, but a Windows version should be coming soon. [SaveAsWWF via core77]

I honestly can’t see this format being implemented as a mainstream idea. People like seeing something in print.
This idea, while genius (to an extent), would destroy the world of print such as magazines, literature and catalogs. Besides, not everyone can afford to carry around personal tablet PCs to read their newly downloaded copy of Jane Austin’s new romantic novel about the same two lovebirds.

I see a large issue if its used for commercial manuals and the like,

however i could see organisations and militaries liking an eyes only format, even if it likely would only take 2 coders over a week to make a printing app

Wow, Adobe Acrobat has been able to save print disabled PDF’s for years as a security feature, so this isn’t exactly a new idea, just repurposing something that has already been done.

If anyone ever sends me a WWF document, I would printscreen the contents, print the imaged-documents out, crumble em, take a photo, and send the photo back to the sender. I may even print the photo, and send them a hard copy.

If print screen doesn’t work (for any reasons at all), I’ll just crumble up the same number of papers as in the document, and send a picture of that back to the sender.

Why? You know, just to let them know what they saved with their WWF format.

Normally, I wouldn’t use the printer. But I’m prepared to make an exception if I EVER receive a WWF document.

Just for fun then, I’ll send you War and Peace and a couple of encyclopedias in WWF format.
That should keep you busy for while…

it is more of an activism than something really practical
