A nice little Christmas treat for Vodafone owners of HTC’s rather aged Magic Android smartphone – you can now download an update to Froyo, giving you an almost new phone again.
Considering the magic is already rather dated – especially in the processor department, the fact that Vodafone have updated it to Froyo is kind of surprising. I wouldn’t expect Gingerbread to rock up anytime ever though…
If you happened to grab the Magic through 3 when it launched, sadly there’s no word on an update for you yet…

Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 2:28 AMYeah, I was quite surprised last Friday when I woke up to an update. On the UK Vodafone website there are talks about security issues with 1.6 that forced Vodafone to release the update.
The update comes in two parts. Not sure what the first one does, but it wiped my micro SD card (lost all my photos and music). The second update turns the phone into a 2.2 Android phone. Great!

Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 4:33 AMI downloaded the update in Brisbane yesterday. It is a two stage process,OTA, and all went fine.
The Magic is working great with no noticeable lag (so far). Well I should say, no more lag than the Magic always had. It was never a fast phone compared to today’s standards.
My initial impression is that the touch screen on the Magic seems a little more responsive and sensitive to touch than it was with Android 1.6. That’s hard to quantify, but just saying.
I have to say that any trade off between performance vs all the added benefits of Froyo… Gimme Froyo!
