The GizMod: Security, Security, Security

Gizmodo AU

If your car had a PS3, wireless router and digital TV tuner in it, wouldn’t you want to put in the best alarm system you could possibly imagine? That’s why we went to the guys at Intelematics to look after security for the GizMod Rukus.

The CarCom system we had installed is as good as it gets. Using a combination of a GSM SIM card and a GPS tracker, Intelematics offers a full service suite that lets you know that your car is secure at all times. If someone does break in and steal your car, they’ll know about it and let you know straight away and, if they have to, inform the police on your behalf. Once the car’s stopped, they can even remotely immobilise the engine.

And thanks to the SIM card, you can call them up and imagine you’re David Hasselhoff driving around in Kitt. You know… Because it will sound like the car is talking to you while you drive. Couple that with the ability to unlock the car remotely if you leave your keys inside and the fact they warn you if your car’s battery needs attention, and you’ve got the best security system money can buy. The only way it could be better would be if there was a remote controlled driver ejection seat to make any crims really think twice about stealing your ride…

Nice install! People need to stop complaining and start appreciating the effort that’s going into this.

Did I just watch a review or an advertisement? I’m confused. And why no demo of the features instead of just talking about it?

He told us the name of the product, the company that makes the product, and the features of the product. I consider that a review.
Obviously the features are good or they wouldn’t have chosen the product?

And what do you mean no demo? Did you want them to break into the car to test it out? That’s a waste of the company’s time and resources if they then have to contact you to find out if the car was broken into or not.

As I said, stop complaining and start appreciating. If you’re not going to appreciate, stop watching the videos. This is the 6th video and one of you noobs always has to complain about something.

Good job Nick, looking forward to the next episode. Until then maybe you’d like to use the car to run over some of these commenters?

Joel who were you referring to when you originally said stop complaining? Your post is timestamped before mine.

It is naive to say “obviously the features are good or they wouldn’t have chosen the product” because that’s exactly what they would want you to believe if this were an advertisement. I’ll remember you the next time I’m designing a TV commercial and dress people in lab coats because “obviously since he is a scientist it must be a good product”.

Apparently there is no room in your world for criticisms and if that’s the case then perhaps it is *you* who should learn to accept that not everything in the world is perfect, or stop reading comments sections.

As a simple example of what they could have demo’d would be the remote unlock feature. They could have thrown the keys in the car, locked it, and called up the call centre and asked the operator to unlock the car. Simple and effective demonstration that would have added significant value to this “review”.

Your timestamps must be wrong because it was in reply to your comment.

Putting someone in a lab coat doesn’t make them a scientist. Having Nick explain why it’s good makes it a review.. as he’s a tech reviewer. You do know what Gizmodo is.. right?

Criticism is acceptable, but most of the comments I read as part of the Gizmod series are peoples unnecessary complaints that it’s “not techy enough” or “not the right choice” or “this is an advertisement not a review”.
If that was an advertisement then every review must be, because all reviews contain the product name, who makes it, and what it does. That’s hardly an advertisement. In fact, it was mentioned that this isn’t usually a post-purchase install. And I don’t remember him telling us to go out and get mod installs of alarm systems.

About the remote unlock feature. As I said, I don’t think the company wants to be bothered for something like that. Use your imagination. You pick up the phone, they unlock it, the door opens, magic! Just accept it and be a bit more open minded to what the Giz guys are doing.

Correction about the timestamps. My original comment was for the people in general that have complained on every other episode on the Gizmod. I knew it wouldn’t be long until someone found a complaint about this.
