After polling the US a few months ago, Nielsen conducted a worldwide poll to gauge interest in 3DTV displays. SPOILER ALERT: less than 10 per cent of those asked said they’ll buy a 3D television in the next year.
Another 15 per cent polled said they might buy a 3DTV, but that’s not so promising when over 60 per cent said they they definitely won’t buy a 3DTV. And when only narrowed down to North America, just 3 per cent of North Americans say they plan to buy a 3D set in the next year. As far as 3D in the home goes, GigaOm is all doom and gloom, declaring 3DTV to be dead on arrival, and it’s tough to disagree. I sure as hell don’t want to deal with the glasses, especially when more than one person is in the room. Someday, when glasses-less displays arrive, maybe we can try this grand 3D experiment again, yeah? [Nielsen via GigaOm]

Thursday, December 23, 2010 at 8:44 AMIt isn’t just the glasses, which are a pain, (particularly if you have to wear them over your own glasses). 3D just doesn’t add anything compelling to the viewing experience. My family don’t bother with the 3D version of movies anymore, the novelty has worn off.

Thursday, December 23, 2010 at 8:55 AMi just took delivery of my new 3d tv… i didn’t really buy it for the 3d… i bought it cause its an awesome tv… however i did try it out and while it was certainly pretty cool (especially with games) i prob won’t use it all that much
the samsung glasses sat nicely in front of my own glasses all though i feel it’d prob be better with my contacts in

Thursday, December 23, 2010 at 9:32 AMHands up who didn’t see this coming!?
Seriously though it felt the entire time like the market trying to dictate the demand.
Even 3D movies (at the cinema) are best left as an occasional novelty.
Nobody was ever going to spend thousands on something they didn’t want to begin with.

Thursday, December 23, 2010 at 10:39 AMwhy don’t we wait til there is some content before we write it off. not many people are going to buy another large TV just for 3D when there is no content. so all you are left with are the people in the market for a new TV which is not what the industry wants. they want everyone to want a new tv.

Thursday, December 23, 2010 at 11:06 AMwith glases issues aside, the 3d “experience” really works when you have a massive screen. at home those little bits and pieces comming at you through a tinny 60″ windows is not that breath taking. i have tried avatar on imax, normal cinema and 60″ LCD. With imax while watching you forget you are wearing those glasses, at home 3dtv its become an annoyance.

Thursday, December 23, 2010 at 12:16 PMDon’t forget those who’s eyes/brains are suitable for watching TV. My girlfriend and I sat through 3 hrs of Avatar and ended up with headaches lasting days.
