Secretary Of Defence: Let’s Stop Freaking Out Over WikiLeaks, Nobody Trusted Us Anyway

Secretary of Defence Robert Gates is keeping it really real regarding the WikiLeaks controversy. His take? It doesn’t matter. All the talk of international embarrassment and diplomatic implosion doesn’t change the fact that nobody trusts the US to begin with.

Speaking with some seriously refreshing candour, Gates cracked, “Every other government in the world knows the United States government leaks like a sieve, and it has for a long time.” So maybe we should all relax over “meltdowns” and the like. You don’t need to worry about tainting international image when it’s already tainted! [NYT]

Anyone who is surprised by any of the Wikileaks “revelations” is seriously deluded!

people aren’t surprised of dodgy dealings. everyone knows and expects this sort of thing happens. there is a world of difference between knowing things are going on in general by a group and having specific evidence of an individual’s exact behaviour be that illegal or just embarrassing. it certainly won’t be changing the way the world sees governments but there may be a few nervous individuals.

A sane voice amongst the hysteria. How refreshing.

We’ve watched/read enough Tom Clancy/Robert Ludlum/etc to, by now, realise this sort of behaviour is par for the course. Was I aware the US government was deliberately keeping tabs on the UN? No. But would this sort of thing be within the realm of possibility? Definitely.

It’s refreshing to see a guy come out, shrug and say: Deal with it.

What the ……. a rational American. He must be a plant. That will come out in a leak surely.

Support the need for secrecy before an event. After the event its need to be revealed within reason and assessed.
