Is Apple Ditching Discrete Graphics In The Next MacBook Pros?

Apple has long-preferred Nvidia graphics in its MacBook Pros to Intel’s integrated solution, even engineering their own graphics-switching technology to squeeze Nvidia in. But after the upcoming release of Intel’s next-gen Sandy Bridge processor, those days may be over.

According to CNET sources, MacBooks with 13-inch or smaller screen sizes will rely solely on Sandy Bridge’s integrated graphics, which are said to be about twice as good, graphically, as the current crop of Core i5 guts. 15 and 17-inch models will move to discrete AMD graphics.

If proven true, the rumour is an extremely positive sign for Intel given how notoriously picky Apple is about the components it uses. Apple would also be in a position to no longer release laptops – like the recent MacBook Airs – that disappointingly house 2009′s Core2Duo processors to accommodate an Nvidia GPU.

Of course, this could all be a negotiating ploy! But even if Apple’s just using Sandy Bridge as leverage, that’s still a sign that Intel’s next-gen integrated graphics are worth taking seriously. [CNET]

lol. so much for steam on mac… way to completely ruin the most popular macbook…

the integrated graphics might be ‘twice as fast’ but it was pretty much on the same level as the performance of the GPUs in the iPhones…

The integrated graphics processing was running crysis at a reasonable speed of around 47 fps. All the games on steam for mac will run fine.

I don’t know much about this – so correct me if i’m wrong, but wouldnt using intergrated graphics take away the processign edge for software like Photoshop and AfterEffetcs? the pride and joy of Apple use? More and more applications are taking advantage of GPU’s extra power in co-operation with the CPU… and now they are taking that feature away?

Like i said – i could be way off here… I like that they may finally put an i5 into the 13″ MBP BUT not sure if the lack of a descrete GPU will turn me off…

We won’t know for sure how much improvement is in these new Sandy Bridge GPUs until production chips are reviewed & benched, but a recent post over at notebookreview forums shows some screen hots of some (preproduction?) Alienware M17xR3, showing 3Dmark06 results of:
    *15,940 for 2GHz i7-2630QM running Intel’s integrated GPU
    *20,155 for 2.2GHz i7-2720QM with AMD HD 6900
    *16,957 for 2.3GHz i7-2820QM with Nvidia GTX 460M
Its interesting how close the Intel GPU is to the 460M
