Google Wants To Take Your Caps Lock Away

It looks like Google is pulling a Steve Jobs with Chrome: They are going to eliminate the Caps Lock key from all the notebooks made for that operating system. Why? Because they know better and we are all idiots.

According to Google, this will improve the quality of the comments, because people will not be able to write all in capital letters. I'm not a fan of the caps lock key myself. I never use it, so it can go to hell, for all I'm concerned. But taking away choice from people is not good, especially when this is not going to improve the quality of comments.

First, PEOPLE WOULD STILL BE ABLE TO WRITE AS MUCH AS THEY WANT IN CAPITALS. See, my left pinky did that, not the cap locks.

then, people would be able to write all without using any caps at all, which i find just as annoying as writing all in caps. maybe the next step is to enforce proper capitalisation for all text fields. and is google also going to forbid the unnecessary repetition of exclamation and interrogation marks!!!!!!?????

At the end, improving the quality of comments doesn't depend on the caps lock key. People who virtually rise their voices and insult on the internet will continue to do so. What really improves the quality is moderation and, ultimately, education. [SAI]

omg, I can't believe how much people care about that! "omg, they wrote in big letters! quick! call my counselor!"

It's this kind of journalism that has created an atmosphere in politics where nobody will dare to say anything that's unscripted, particularly not anything humorous, because when taken out of context and beaten up the joking comments are always the ones that make the best headlines. I'm so excited to see that we've made it to the point where tech "journalists" are going to do the same thing to the tech industry. Bravo. The irony (is it irony? i can never tell) is that by flogging this horse that was never even alive and comparing el goog to steve jobs you're pushing them to become more like the big, "magical" advertising agency that is apple, where everyone says the same thing, and nobody has a goddamn sense of humour.

ThIs Is FaNtAsTiC!?! A11 j00z wh0z comenz r kraps can haz cheezburgar!!

stupid plans to better the internet, it will never work.. we just need to raise the next generation to be better than the current young one..

It was my understanding that it was a double tap on the shift key to activate caps lock, like on iphones

Good idea, it's a pointless key

hell yeah.. it has no practical use in a post wingdings world

Also, from the logia awards voting page..

So that we can notify the major prize winner, or to validate your vote if required, please complete all details below, using all CAPITAL letters. Please note, your details will remain confidential, however your vote will not count unless valid information is entered into all required fields.

Just think how much time (and millions of dollars) will be saved by IT helpdesks not having to respond to password or login issues - all because of that pesky caps lock key...

    Doom it forever I say.

Good idea, I had to chase a utility to block out the 'caps lock' key on my laptop, I kept hitting it instead of the 'shift' key because the keypad layout is a bit different from my other keypads. I wish ALL the keypads were exactly the same, for a given language.

Booo !! i use caps all day @ work for cad drawings.. i would need to blutak the shift key down haha

"fields. and is," you should probably fix that. :P

CopperCab is screwed if he decides to get a Chrome OS notebook.

Isn't the real reason for the removal of the caps lock key just to make room for the big, easily pressed, search key? The same search key that will make Google money every time somebody presses it?

(I am sure the search engine can be changed, but realistically how many people will?)

I personally think that the search key is irrelevant with the Google Chrome omnibox set to feature instant search. I would rather it was a new tab button.

Why didn't someone tell me about the CAPS LOCK key earlier? I've been holding down the shift key with my left pinky this whole time!

Sure, shouting on the internet is annoying, but that's only a small part of the problem of comments.

It's those that c 2 rite lk ths al teh tiem!!!!
I've seen full paragraphs written like that with no punctuation (Except for excessive exclamation and question marks).

Although after reading others comments, it does seem to be a useless key now only kept because it's always been there since the typewriter days. Do away with it, sure. But it's not going to have a big dent on improving comment quality.

Maybe the Caps Lock key could be replaced with a Sarcasm key, which would make my life so much easier. Everyone who knows me knows I'm a sarcastic bastard but somehow they forget this when I make a sarcastic remark in text and it all goes tits up.

CAPS LOCK IS A WAY OF LIFE

If you think any key is useless, then one or more of the following applies:
    - you don't have Autohotkey
    - you aren't very creative
    - you don't spend very much time on your computer.

THIS IS AN O.K. IDEA BUT IT WILL BE REALLY WEIRD MOVING THE POSITION OF THE [TAB] KEY.

Jesus, are you really that dense that you don't understand it's a joke? They're getting rid of Caps Lock because it's not often used and decided to poke a little fun while doing so. Chill out.

Taking away options? Here is an option for you: Don't buy the Chrome netbook if it doesn't have Caps Lock....

I find the capslock key to come in handy whenever I have to type with just one hand for whatever reason.

Oh gods, that is something I've wanted forever! Stupid, stupid, stupid crappy key!
That and browser keyboard shortcuts for web navigation.

You realize there are already plenty of browser keyboard shortcuts for chrome and firefox, as well as many extensions, plugins, and freeware apps?

If you don't find keyboard shortcuts useful, you eiter haven't tried them to realise all the time/mouse clicks they save or you're a n00b that wants to argue

HELP MY TEXT IS ALL BIG AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, MY BOSS AND ALL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY THINK I'M YELLING AT THEM! MY LIFE IS RUINED!!!!!! HOW CAN I STOP THIS?????

    Hahahahahaha.

Google made a joke and it went straight over Gizmodo's head.

      What, you don't believe it?

I TEND TO HOLD SHIFT WHILE YELLING THINGS ON THE INTERNET

      THIS MADE ME SMILE.

What the heck are cap locks? Why would you need more than one?
