Here’s a spot of good news for iView lovers who don’t have a PS3 or Bravia TV or iPad. An out-of-the-browser version of our favourite catch-up TV service is coming to Samsung internet-enabled TVs and Blu-ray players in the new year.
Samsung TVs and Blu-ray players offering Samsung Apps via the Internet@TV service will get on-demand access to all iView content in “first quarter 2011″. ABC is also working on bringing out-of-the-browser versions to other IPTVs by the end of 2011.
Mind you, streaming iView content to your TV will eat into your monthly allowance.
With ABC iView, Xbox Live and more data allowance than we’ll ever need, I think I’ll be spending all summer in front my parents’ Samsung plasma. La Niña isn’t looking so bad after all.

Friday, December 3, 2010 at 1:58 PMHell yes! I have a PS3 and an ipad, but being able to watch it just via the TV would still be my preferred solution.

Friday, December 3, 2010 at 5:51 PMSay what? How would the ISP know it’s the TV requesting the data, and not a PC? Does it pull the data from a different server, that’s not unmetered? That’s kinda weird, if it is.

Friday, December 3, 2010 at 5:49 PMIf only I could get broadband via one of those ISPs… :-(
The elephant in the room is, of course, that the elephant *isn’t* in the room… no Bigpond on that list.

Friday, December 3, 2010 at 8:45 PMGreat news, will be nice to see iview on the big screen…even if it costs some bandwidth quota

Friday, December 3, 2010 at 9:05 PMI’m with Comcen, and I really wish this was unmetered through the iPad. Doesn’t really make sense to me, It’s probably enough to stop me using the app when I can watch it unmetered in a browser. It’s a shame really.

Sunday, May 29, 2011 at 2:01 PMWell, “first quarter 2011″ is long gone, and still no iView app for Samsung TVs.

Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at 1:45 AMConfirmed today the iview app is available for Samsung Internet connected TVs. Here’s some photos to show you:

Works quite well, OK interface, uses your remote’s play, pause and skip buttons.
If it doesn’t appear in the “What’s New” or Video app listings yet you need to reset the internet on your TV so it reinstalls the default apps for Australia (Samsung may have not yet pushed the update out as it seems that the app is there, but it’s not visible, at least to those of us with 2010 model Samsungs. People with the new 2011 SMARTtv models are reporting to have it).
So to do this you need to trick your TV into installing all the “default” apps. One way is to change the country to something else, then change it back to Australia as follows:
- Start Internet@TV
- Hit the following buttons:
“>>” (fast forwar”)
“2 8 9″
“<<" (rewind)
- Choose different country than Australia (X)
- Accept the terms and conditions (3x)
- Wait for it to install the default apps for Country X
- Repeat the above steps to switch back to Australia. This will include installing the iview app
- Delete and install other apps you want/don't want
Enjoy
Noting only it's not yet unmetered through ISPs like iiNet, as they currently only unmeter streaming through Flash, which this isn't. Hopefully that will come too soon.
