Want To Know How Empty The Dams Are? There’s An App For That

Gizmodo AU

The past 15 years or so have been pretty tough on the country’s water supply – constant drought and a booming population has meant that dam capacity has struggled to move upwards. If you want to know just how tough it’s been on our water supply, the Bureau of Meteorology has just released a free iPhone app to track Aussie dam levels.

The app is a free download, and aside from being a rather stark reminder of just how much we rely on limited reserves of water to survive, covers more than 250 sites around the country. If you wanted to know how much water we have left and couldn’t be bothered checking out the BOM site, this free app could be worth a download…

Reading this just makes me sad. I reckon RIM’s CEO had a point when he said that there’s no good reason to “app-ify” the internet.

This information is easily accessible to anyone who’s capable of doing a Google search and navigating BOM’s website. By the time you’ve found the app on iTunes, downloaded and installed it, you could have found the relevant webpage and bookmarked it for future reference.

Then again, if it helps more people to be more aware of our country’s water-wastefulness, maybe it’s a worthwhile exercise.
