The Hipstamatic War Photography Of The NY Times

If you thought war photography on the front page of today’s New York Times looked different, you’re right. I did too. But I’d never have guessed that it was taken with an iPhone. Using Hipstamatic, no less!

When NYT photog Damon Winter went to northern Afghanistan to catalog the efforts of the First Battalion, 87th Infantry of the 10th Mountain Division, he took all the fancy camera equipment you would expect. He’d shoot video of firefights with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, sure. But he also grabbed still photos using Hipstamatic, an app that lets you choose among a huge selection of filters that’s long been one of our favourites, as well.

It’s not the first time an iPhone has been used for war photography, and it won’t be the last. But it’s a sharp reminder that your phone’s not just becoming your go-to computer—it’s becoming your go-to camera as well. [NY Times, Image credit: Damon Winter, NY Times]

Actually, catalog is the correct US spelling, and being a US article it makes sense. Stop being bloody pedantic.

You really couldn’t tell they were done on an iphone? Great photos, but the hipstamatic stuff is always pretty obvious. It’s not that mind-blowing.

Yeah probably shouldn’t of mentioned it being surprising.
