Inside every car is a dream… A dream that one day, someone will install a 3G wireless router so that they can always be online. This week, we make that dream a reality for the GizMod Rukus.
Using a BigPond wireless gateway, which connects to the Internet using Telstra’s NextG network, we’re able to give the Rukus a wireless hotspot inside the car. The best part about using this wireless modem – as opposed to a USB dongle, for example – is that this gives us ethernet ports as well, which is going to prove very useful when we get to the next install. The gateway is running off the car’s 12V power system, which is convenient for power management.

Monday, November 29, 2010 at 12:53 PMI got as far as “the cars naturally 12v so i wired it in….”
I hope that means he used a DC-DC converter or that puppy is going to blow when he starts the car and find out it’s 14volts and not 12volts.

Not, just that, but the voltage can drop below 10.8v so you’d really be after a wide range in 12vdc out. But, the internals just might be engineered to cope with the higher continuos voltages… doubt it though.

Monday, November 29, 2010 at 10:12 PMIsn’t it the other way around? ie drops to about 8v when cranking (starting) and up to about 14v when charging (>~1000 rpm)

Monday, November 29, 2010 at 11:18 PMI give that router a week before the transients in the car blow it sky high…I deal with this sort of stuff every day. FAIL….
buck/boost DC-DC converter is mandatory…
Those routers are fully sic though bro…
