The data was taken from a random sampling of 275,000 Pageonce users, and includes at least 5000 users per platform. And it could mean a whole bunch of things! Either iPhone users spend more money on average, or they have more debt on average, or the simple averaging masks extreme expenditures at the high and low end. BlackBerry and iPhone are arguably the most commonly used enterprise phones, so that might have something to do with racking up higher monthly charges.
The study also took a look at monthly phone bill charges, which had a dark horse leader:

Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 3:04 PMWTF? Who has an _average monthly_ credit card spend of over $6,000?
Something has got to be wrong with that piece of “research”..

Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 3:22 PMActually, I think it’s referring to the users total credit card balance at the end of the month. An ongoing credit card debt is easy to build even with a minimal monthly spend and they just keep paying off the minimum. The less here is that people with iphones spend more money on stuff they don’t need to give people they don’t know impressions that won’t last whereas Winmo people are smarter and more attractive naturally.

Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 6:53 PMI used to think that until my friend signed up for the Telstra $180 plan.
I also know a girl that had unlimited with 3 and got a extra $20 data plan.
Alot of people spend more than they need to on phones. I really dont think most people on the unlimited plans even make a dent in using it up.

Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 5:20 PMOr perhaps because a large proportion of the iPhone userbase consists of relatively well-off people with higher levels of disposable income?
Credit card expense per month doesn’t necessarily equate to credit card debt at the end of each month.

Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 6:03 PMI too agree, the credit card expense is more likely their monthly balance. Obviously it’s in their interest to keep this as low as possible and pay it on time. In fact, it’s the people with the LOWEST credit card balance who can afford to pay it off, rather than the iPhone users who are apparently living on their near-$7000 credit card bill.
@ Art Nau: In the US, the average ‘unlimited’ plan is $200. This is on top of the $200 outright they pay for handset cost. Yeah, they’re getting screwed. And on top of this, there are always idiots who underestimate their quota and go overboard which inflates their monthly statement.

Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 6:56 PMThose figures don’t seem very representative… I suspect that users of that app are much richer and have much more intensive phone habits than the average phone users…
