Great to see Telstra getting competitive. The only winners here are us consumers now that the best network has competitive data plans.
Lets see how the others react, could be an interesting new year period in the mobile space!

From the link: “If you use more than this amount each month you pay for that extra browsing at a significantly reduced pay-as-you-go rate, so you get more for your money.”

In the fine print: “‘Pay As You Go’, at the rate of $2 per MB.”

Get ready to get stung if you use your phone as a modem as they suggest.

      From the Telstra website…..
Excess data usage $0.25 per MB (charged per KB or part)

My “pay-as-you-go” rate is 1.5cents/megabyte (post-paid), not 25cents or $2. Yet I can’t seem to find anything like this with a major carrier. The Telstra et al buisness plan seems to rely on charging extortative rates to people who go over their “cap”. This is bill-shock by design.

Speaking for myself, I just want a phone service and a mobile internet service where I pay a fair market rate for the services I actually use. I don’t want a “cap” or a “bundle” or any such nonsense. Is this really so hard?

With no data pack the pay-as-you-go rate is $2/MB. With a data pack the pay-as-you-go rate is significantly reduced.

It does pay to read the fine print.

what i would like to know is…… does it effect me
i purchased a htc desire and got it on a plan at the same time (june) on a $49 voice/data plan but it only had the 200mb of data on the plan. now… is telstra going to discrimanate against Early adopters? or will they roll this out to already loyal customers that have in some cases stuck with them for years for mobiles.

I hear it around on many whirlpool threads that generally when there’s an update you need to call up and ask/complain for a change, and it isn’t too hard to get it. They won’t update your plan automatically.

Just what I’ve heard though. Sorry can’t link to an example :/

Just ring them up and they’ll change it for you. However, if you’re on a contract and you’ve been on that contract for less than 12 months, then you’ll have to pay extra.

Why would anyone complain about a plan that they voluntarily signed up to? Also, why would a telecommunications company give someone things that they aren’t entitled to under their contract?

        @Michael
They’ll give it to you to keep you as a customer after the contract expires. Having digruntled customers isn’t a lot better than not having the customer at all if in a few months they will pack up and leave.

According to the website current users can upgrade their data allowance to the new numbers for free, we just have to call them or go online.

It says in the link Nick posted:
      http://exchange.telstra.com.au/2010/11/22/social-networking-over-your-mobile-gets-even-cheaper/
that – “I’m sure this news will be music to the ears of existing users and, I hope, will encourage others to give mobile browsing a go.” So it would appear that you can but again whether it’ll be free to upgrade isn’t clear.

In my case, the phone+calls plan is $49, and the data pack is +$10. So you can change/update the data pack without impacting your contract.

I can confirm that all is needed for existing customers to upgrade to the new plans is a phone call to request it. I did it myself earlier today. This is at no extra charge. I’m not the only one either.

I’ve been on a $49 cap for the past 3 months called up and got it upgraded from the 200mb (plus the bonus 500mb the plan cam with). Main problem is explaining it to the rep, they obviously didn’t get sent the memo but if u point them to the Telstra Exchange website they just get there supervisors to authorise it.

I called up this morning and got switched over in 10 minutes. You don’t have to complain, I just said I saw the data packs change and want to upgrade. Was surprisingly painless!
I’m on exactly the same plan on exactly the same phone, go for it!

I’ve been on the $49 200mb plan for the HTC Desire since August. Called Telstra yesterday afternoon and while the call centre staff hadn’t been briefed on the changes data, I was eligible to switch over to 1gb.
Only glitch is that I was at 98% of 200mb yesterday, and it looks like somehow they have me at 98% of 1gb today.

When you make the change it’s applied at a pro-rata rate based on where you’re up to in your current billing cycle. Then, from the beginning next billing cycle you’ll get the full 1GB. Make sense?

I switched my wife’s plan and since she’s halfway through her bill she’s at 50% of the 1GB, even though her actual usage is <200MB.

Hey sweet, pretty much nothing going for the other networks now with similar plans.

Though check up on the upfront fees… getting an iPhone 4 32Gb on the 49 plan now costs 349 upfront. Small raise but be aware of it.

I was told that yesterday and was happy to settle for 1 gig@ $19. Rang this morning and was told that there was nothing preventing the code for 1gig@$10 being applied to my Business 45 plus plan, which I gratefully accepted.

The CSO said its just a case of the plan being so new and not anyone being given the appropriate heads up that has everyone giving slightly different versions of the new deal.

I’m on a $49 cap since August, so I’m in the 4th month of my contract. I just called 125 111 and had my data pack upgraded in 5 minutes – I was told it might take a few hours to kick in so I’m still waiting for that, but it was a fairly painless process.

So now I’m paying $49 for $400 of calls/sms and 1GB data. I’ve been considering buying an extra browsing pack so I could have more data for a while now, so it’s nice to get it for free. Words can’t describe how happy I am with Telstra (and I never thought I’d say that!). I can’t imagine switching to another mobile company for a *very* long time. :-)

Just rang them (132200) and was told the offer is for new customers, existing users need to upgrade to a higher dollar browsing pack to get the ‘bonus’ data allowance advertised, which is not what the telstra website says.

There goes 5 minutes of my life I won’t get back… And I’m a telstra customer because???

    Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at 10:51 AM

I’m on the $49 cap plan. I didn’t have to call anyone, my data plan was upgraded automatically (imagine my suprise when I was checking my usage one day and saw that I had 1.5gb available!). Needless to say, it was a pleasant surprise since I didn’t even know Telstra was rolling out new data plans.

So let me just get this straight before I go to Telstra. I got my iPhone 4 when they came out on the $79 plan which got me 500mb + extra 500mb until the start of November.

The $79 plan now offers 2gb of data. Am I able to call up Telstra and get them to alter my plan so that I will get upgraded from the 500mb to the 2gb free of charge?

      Thursday, November 25, 2010 at 2:25 AM

@Gavin, yes. I signed up to the $49 cap which got me 200+300mb which was actually a $20 data pack at 50% price.

I rang on the 22nd and changed to the new $20 data pack which is now 2GB. As part of my contract they kept the 50% discount of data packs which in term gives me 2gb for $10 :D so I still pay $49 at the end of the month.
