This is a message to all vegetarians and vegans out there. From rubber to adhesives to anti-aging creams to medicines to shampoo to instrument strings to plastic to charcoal to wallpaper to air filters: You can’t run from beef! [Streakr]
Cow’s drink the milk of another cow. If you drank breastmilk you’d still be a vegan. I agree with Frank a vegetarian or a vegan is not defeated by accidentally purchasing products with animal content. And there ARE vegan friendly alternatives to all of these things you have listed above.
Wait….. what? So, upon visiting gizmodo to read up on some technology news, instead we are presented with this “article” insulting vegetarians and vegans?
My choice not to consume food with meat or animal products is a personal choice, and one which I take care not to inflict on others, because its a conclusion and choice one should come to themselves. So I find it interesting that people will roll their eyes and get their back up when a vegetarian preaches to them, yet they still feel they have the right to do the same thing back.
The picture above you posted merely shows the state at which our society is in that it relies on using animal products to such a degree. You know why cows are used? Because its cheaper…. consumers who are blind to the process in which their goods are manufactured and care only about the price which they pay. The number of vegan products coming onto the market now is ever increasing, in response to a comsumer demand for such products.
I dont like getting on my soapbox, but Im yet to see the actual point of posting this piece. Im open to an explanation; please, let me know what I’m missing about this piece….
Between articles with bad grammar, spelling mistakes, dubious sources and now this… whatever you can call it…. I am having grave fears that real journalism is dieing out, for this.
Your rant was close to perfect, except that while you were lamenting “the death of real journalism”, you contributed to the “death of the english language”. It’s “dying”, not “dieing”. Does this really matter? No? Neither does the fact that a tech blog posted an interesting piece.
1. Vegetarianism isn’t about having nothing to do with animal products. It’s about NOT EATING MEAT. A vegetarian can wear leather shoes and still not eat meat. It’s not a ‘moral objection to killing widdle animaws’, it’s about NOT EATING MEAT. Pretty simple, right? (I’m not sure about veganism. I thought veganism was about not EATING animal products, but maybe it extends to using?)
2. This shows to me that we actually are utilising livestock quite well and that there isn’t really any waste. At least I hope that’s so. It’s a very respectful way of dealing with the fact we kill animals for our own use.
Agreed, I kind of like the fact that – if we do indeed kill animals – that they are being utilized to the fullest. It’d be much more annoying to see half of the animal wasted.
not entirely. I am not a vegan I am a vegetarian BUT I am a vegetarian for the moral aspect not the dietary. I do not consume meat and do everything I can to avoid animal by-products. Thusly whenever I learn a product has something with animal in it I forever avoid it. Simple as that. There are vegan alternatives to all of the above listed products.
What nonsense, a blast from the past.. these all have vegan alternatives and most of them have been plant based for two decades, I repeat, there are plant sourced alternatives to all of the above, you know , the products vegans buy!!!
Conclusion : the artist knows very little about the facts and wants a cheap shot.. failed.
Another example of people’s lack of understanding of what ‘vegetarian’ and ‘vegan’ mean.
For the record I love meat. But I at least make an effort to understand the world. People ripping off vegetarians, especially ones saying ‘oh they’re so weak if they ate meat they’d be stronger’ – give me a break.
A vegan chooses his/her lifestyle to reduce unnecessary suffering through the avoidance of animal exploitation, mainly worsened by modern intensive farming practices. This is the cause.
Ultimately it’s not about “purity” or using animal products or not, but rather whether animals are treated as sentient living beings and not organisms that we harvest from (the Matrix?)
It’s not a war between meat-eaters and vegans, and vegans haven’t been “defeated” because they accidentally buy products with animal content in them.

Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 10:16 AMSee, I look at this and think 2 things.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 3:51 PMA simple wikipedia search on Veganism displays the following.
“Veganism is a philosophy and lifestyle whose adherents seek to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose.”
So, as the conclusion below the cow states, this article is correct.
