The Best Way Save $US1800 On A Hackintosh Mac Pro

While the majority of Hackintoshes we’ve seen recently have involved netbooks, there’s something to be said for making your own $US2700 Mac Pro for $US900 in components… and a cardboard box.

Apparently, someone at One Block Off the Grid was having trouble running Adobe After Effects on his Mac. The obvious solution? Buy a bunch of parts from Amazon and assemble them in the box in which they were shipped:

The computer itself has pretty good specs, with a 2.66 Intel Core i5 CPU, a 1 TB hard drive, 8 GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM, and an XFX Radeon HD 5770 1GB DDR5 Graphics Card. To run Snow Leopard on this computer, Kalvin used iBoot and MultiBeast.

Sure, you may lose some style points. But you make up for it in talking points. [TUAW]

    Hm. This is nothing like a mac pro. More like an imac.
    Hey, I don’t mock anyone digging in and building a hackintosh, but to compare this build to a mac pro system is a little inaccurate at best.

    Any chance of listing the individual components and their model numbers? I’m planning to replace my Winblows computer soon with a Mac, and a hackintosh is an attractive option.

    Why anyone would take a perfectly capable PC and then dumb it down by running OSX on it is simply beyond comprehension.

      ..although the idea of building these and selling them off to the iSheep at 2/3 the price is tempting. Easily clear $500 for an hour’s work.

        Agreed – I recently bought a PC (I have been a lifelong mac user) simply because of the price and it took me hours to even connect to the internet. Granted, I’m not much of a PC user BUT christ, what an ordeal! Homegroups and strange permission settings and don’t get me started on networking with Macs. I guess I can’t expect too much but ehh… whatever. It’s still a good computer just frustrating.

        I like this cardboard compy, it’s cool.

        @NICK – If by *advanced* you actually mean unnecessarily complex, unlogically structured and generally unpleasant, then, yes it is very *advanced* ;-P As for this Hackintosh I’d love to see some pics

        Well let’s see… I go to use a Mac, and things I regularly use are completely missing. Not just hidden, they don’t exist.

        Now that’s pretty shit if you ask me. I’d be frothing over some shit workaround I have to deal with to use a Mac.

        And just to point out… A Mac is still a PC.

    @Ha –

    1. the only reason you think things are missing is because THINGS ARE MISSING mainly VIRUSES bugs and ect, either that or you just don’t bloody know where your going or maybe your just an idiot, oh BooHoo mac’s don’t have paint GET PHOTOSHOP, oh no where is minesweeper: it was replaced by APPSTORE where you can literally get hundreds of free games.

    2. Macs are far easier and simpler especially to set up.

    3. i know Mac’s are usually technically PC’s, as in Personal Computers but we are talking about OS’s here and as you are a PC user i may have to spell it out for you – OS stands for Operating System – if you still don’t get it then tough, wiki it on your safari, should only take a millisecond or two to load the pag-OH WAIT you get internet explorer, well you can talk to me about it when you finally load the page NEXT YEAR!
