Once upon time, Sony Ericsson made the most awesome little mobile phones. Lately, it’s been trying to sell high-end phones exclusively. But the phones suck, and Sony Ericsson’s moving less phones than ever, falling out of the top five brands.
Given where it’s at in market share and profitability compared to everybody else, long-running corporate troubles and slow fade to irrelevancy (see:wondering how to be a trending topic on Twitter), we gotta ask: How much longer before Sony Ericsson kicks it?

Friday, October 22, 2010 at 12:39 PMGeez, such a gloomy prediction Gizmodo and suggesting that SE phones suck is a little extreme. SE will be around for quite a while.
A change in company direction and attitude has yielded a decent outcome for SE, demonstrated by their recent post that they turned a small profit for the first time in a while. I believe their Android sales are doing OK, especially in some Asian markets.
SE have set themselves some realistic goals which along with good decisions I think getting back to being a top five brand is reasonable for them to achieve.

Friday, October 22, 2010 at 1:09 PMI think they should be here for a while.. there are still heaps of need for simple phones with keypads and little apps. I mean not EVERYONE wants or need a smartphone with ALL these gadgets and touchscreens right?

Friday, October 22, 2010 at 1:39 PMI hope they’ll be around for a while. I much prefer Sony Ericsson phones to Nokia ones. (No I don’t work for them)
re: “The phones suck”.. I disagree. I recently purchased a X10 Mini Pro for my wife & after a play with it… dare I say, I was actually a little jealous compared to my iPhone & would consider leaving the iPhone behind for it.
It’s fast, responsive, and actually works as a great phone with decent reception (which is more can be said for my iPhone) and Timescape is a beautiful concept.
OK, so it’s not running the latest version of Andriod etc. The Android market is well well behind the curve when it comes to games & apps etc. but are catching up with the likes of Angry Birds joining the fray.
For it to win over a self confessed Apple FanBoy, I think it’s a pretty decent phone.

Friday, October 22, 2010 at 2:29 PMThis is a pointless poll. SE will be here for a long, long time. They might be out of the top 5, but they’re obviously pulling profit in the millions. A company doesn’t just implode overnight (or within a year), Blockbuster was rotting on its deathbed for YEARS before we all got a whiff of the stink.
And Sony’s not even out of the race (unlike say, Nokia). They still picked a winning horse (Android). They just need to rethink their strategy of using skinned phones and take a cue from some other phone makers (eg HTC). SE still has a tonne of phone pedigree and with feathers like Playstation in their hat can integrate these features into future releases.

Friday, October 22, 2010 at 4:19 PMSE released it’s first android phones. they were not so great… but it was their first use of android. just like the first HTC android phones were quite lackluster. But they learned how to speed things up, improve things and take advantage of it. So too with SE.
Gizmodo needs to realise that if it’s a slow day, they should just admit it, rather than just filling the gaps with pointless crap like this.
