Boxee Box Now Available For Pre-Order

Gizmodo AU

If the Boxee Box media streaming entertainment box has you drooling like a rabid dog, you’ll be happy to know that Australians can now pre-order the box via D-Link’s website, which will guarantee you get a box when it launches mid-November.

The pre-order form gives you the choice of retailer you want to purchase the Boxee Box from – Dick Smith, Harvey Norman and Officework are all on the table – and then you fill in a form. No payment details are taken, as someone from the retailer will contact you to confirm the order and sort out the $349 payment.

The Boxee is retailed at US $199 and yet despite the Australian dollar almost at parity we still have to pay AUD $349!!! That sux :(
    Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t still get one however :)

For those complaining about price vs dollar parity, you have to take into account tariffs, stamp duty etc.

Totally agree mate…. It is unbelievable that the price is $349!!! In light of the fact that exchange is almost $1AUD for $1USD….. Also noticed that Amazon is shipping overseas.

Probably will not be buying it till a more reasonable price is offered.

I was really looking forward to this but not at that price, especially given the lack of online video content available outside of the US.

I’d get an ion or ion2 nettop now instead and run XBMC. I was expecting to pay an additional $50 for the privilege of living in AU but at almost double? forget it.

I don’t understand why is sooooo expensive.
I think i will ask one of my friends to bring me one from US.

Also buying one online from overseas and paying taxes is still cheaper!!!!

    Bad move from D-Link!!

Sorry DLink not at that price.

Will either buy a Eee Box and run the Boxee application or wait for Google TV.

And that’s why I use priceusa.com.au – I refuse to pay the AussieTax that importers feel they can shaft us with.

Well, I’m also with the crowd of comments who were going to buy this locally, but are now not. This gives both boxee and dlink and bad reputation.

So would there be anything to stop me from ordering one from America via http://www.priceusa.com.au? Any power supply-related issues I should be aware of?

Also, will this function like a media centre? IE: Can I just plug in a 2.5″ external usb hard drive and watch any media I have stored on there through the Boxee Box? I’m not really that savvy when it comes to media centres, I’m just looking for something a little better than my WDTV Live! for my loungeroom.

    Thanks

My point exactly… given the conversion from US to AU, even including the extra taxes, import fees, shipping whatever it should be let’s say $270, in the worst case $300 AU but to slap a price of $350 and no debate about it just shows how arrogant the Australian importers and distributors are.

yup will function like a media center

an eeetop is a pretty poor substitute because it doesn’t have the sexy remote. but buying from the usa is sweet!

Dear Guests, With all respect to each of your opinion, please keep in mind, that the price difference can be explained by the different market environment. In Australia, we have a different distribution model. Dominant market players are distributors who are buying products straight from vendors while retailers buy from distributors. Both of them have higher margins than the US counterparts which are able to sell far more products and compensate their smaller margins by quantity which is not possible here in Australia due to less population.

Why does Boxee Box sells for AU$349 in Australia and only for US$199 in the USA?

    US$199 = Street Price
    US$229 = RRP
It is ILLEGAL to publish a street price in AUS/NZ!

Furthermore, once you ship a unit to Australia you end up paying $230 – $250 + you have to buy a power supply, too.
You also LOOSE the warranty as there is no such thing as a global warranty on D-Link products. Most IT vendors don’t offer global warranties.

Those are the few points that explain price difference in many businesses in Australia.

Katia that is all wrong… so so wrong. As a reseller of I.T. gear I can find no reason for it to cost $349.00 AUD. Margins are thin for everyone and the cost to import isn’t that different. It should be $269AUD RRP and would likely sell for $249AUD.

Dlink dropped the ball… and now Boxee is going to hurt as a result.

Sorry IT Reseller, I think everyone has missed the point.
        1. In the US the US$199 is street price
        2. The AU$349 includes the GST and is the recommended retail price RRP.
        3. There is a channel structure in Australia which involves the Vendor (D-Link) selling to the Distributor selling to the Retailer. Naturally there are going to be some margins retained. All those concerned have limited their margins to get to the price. We have debated the pricing and margins now for months and that is the best we can offer to cover costs.
        4. The US do not have such a complicated channel like ours.
        5. The exchange rate now plays a very small part in the problem.

In a nutshell, we respect peoples comments and concerns on the price. We would like to change that but without making a loss its virtually impossible. No one has dropped the ball on this.

We are not making excuses we just wanted to clarify any wrong conclusions people are making.

If it was ONLY exchange rate based then justifiable however its not.
        Many thanks.

I really like the boxee interface, and think there is enough there to justify in oz. If you want it now, just get yourself a discounted last gen apple tv from apple (see clearance $199) and install. Very happy, and much better box that the dlink thing..

A lot of negativity here, it seems like people love poring shit and criticizing new and unique products,
while nothing else better to do.
Why dont you move to US and shop happily at chipper retail prices. even then you be complaining about something !!

I have some great news about the Boxee Box.

After much negotiations and discussions over the last few weeks we have come to an agreement and have been able to reduce the price of the Boxee Box.

The NEW RRP Price for the Boxee Box is now AU$299.95 RRP inc gst. Visit http://www.dlink.com.au/boxee.

Hope this takes the pain out of the price.
Rgds, Boxee Box Team at D-Link.
