America’s Last Pinball Machine Maker Bringing Iron Man Home

Chicago-based Stern – last of the great American pinball makers – is releasing a new “home” edition of its Iron Man cabinet. It leaves out coin slot and some of the fancier geegaws, but it’s a lot better than previous home cabinets.

Priced at $US3800, the Stern Iron Man cabinet is designed for hard core pinball fans who want a nice machine at home, but don’t need all the additional features of a “Pro” cabinet, like playfield magnets or coin mechanisms.

Since you can buy an arcade “Pro” model of the same machine for $US4217.63 on Amazon – down from a RRP of $US6000 – I suspect the “Home” cabinets from Stern will be sold at a more reasonable discount, as well.

    I collect pinball machines.

The idea that playfield magnets are a ‘pro’ feature is crazy. From a player’s perspective, they’re an integral part of the fun of the game.

An Iron Man pin without the magnets is a neutered Iron Man machine.
