Once upon a time, mobile phones were used for making phone calls. Then text messaging became a thing. Cameras, maps and multimedia playback followed and eventually we got apps. But would you be satisfied going back to the bread and butter?
It seems like a no brainer – more is always better, right? Well, not for everyone. We’ve been seeing a lot of commenters lately who say they long for a phone that is just a phone, not some crazy juiced-up supergadget. The argument seems even more credible when you consider how some smartphones in their quixotic quest to do and be everything let the quality of the phone calls themselves fall by the wayside.
So, once you’ve had apps, could you ever go back? Let us know how you feel in the comments.

Friday, September 17, 2010 at 9:58 AMall my CURRENT phone does is call and text.
I want a smart phone… except that they are too expensive (that is being fixed rapidly) and the software, compatibility, flexibility is all a horrible clusterf***
I just want one that’s like my windows 7 PC

Friday, September 17, 2010 at 10:05 AMI would be happy with a phone that did NOT make calls and text. Between Twitter, Facebook, email and Skyp I have not much need to make calls or send SMS. It would also save me the whole $49 Cap part of bill.

Friday, September 17, 2010 at 2:58 PMI agree with this too!
while I currently have a phone that ONLY makes calls and texts, I would quite readily upgrade to one that does everything BUT that! I’m all for a streamlining of the telecommunications into ONE simple category of ‘data’… through 3G or what ever.
bring on an ipod touch with 3G capabilities like the ipad!

Friday, September 17, 2010 at 10:14 AMAnd that’s why there are plenty of sub $100 phones to cover this market.
It’s fair to say that for most of us with the current generation of “smart” phones are paying for features we don’t use. I do a lot of 4WDing and only ever bought a phone for emergencies. I like the fact I can use my phone as a GPS navigator. Sure, I have multiple GPS units anyway, but as a back-up, it’s handy. Plus, it’s always on me when venturing to other urban areas I’m not familiar with.
And apps are great for any computer nut. Goes without saying, really.

Friday, September 17, 2010 at 11:31 AMwhat people are calling “phones” these days are not actually phones. They’re pocket PC’s with phone capabilities. I’d love a nice stripped down phone which only has basic functionality. Everything else i can use a laptop for

Friday, September 17, 2010 at 11:41 AMI’d like a phone that has huge battery life and does nothing but call and text, to use in addition to my smart phone.. but changing sims all the time is a pain..

Friday, September 17, 2010 at 12:29 PMnot everyone who is saying yes is lying. I myself find absolutely no use for any functions on my phone besides to call and sms. If i need music i have an ipod for that which i don’t always need so it’s pointless having it integrated itno my phone somehow. Just a phone with a really long battery life, able to make calls, send texts and maybe the old retro version of snake will keep me at peace.

Friday, September 17, 2010 at 2:24 PMI voted yes because that’s all I do with my phone already. Actually, that’s a lie. I don’t call people. They do call me from time to time though.

Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 10:58 AMYou people are crazy, not one person here actually wants a phone that just calls and texts. I bet you all also want a calculator on it as well!
Besides people can go and buy a phone thats a phone for less than $100, yes it will have other features but if you dont use them, then there is no problem.
Myself personally I hate paying a $49 cap plus another $20 for data when all phone calls and sms’s sent are DATA ASWELL! I can send an email for nothing but an SMS costs 20c WHY!!!!

Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 2:34 PMMy wife wanted a plain vanilla nokia phone that just does voice and sms. All the features that are built into even simple phones make them more complex to use (ie cameras etc). It is not as though you can delete these options from the menus.
In the end I bought her a “new in the box” but old model nokia on ebay. She is happy with that but does get a little frustrated when ppl send her pix messages!
