Want An iPad And A Degree?

Gizmodo AU

Adelaide University’s giving both away. Well, not exactly giving. You still have to earn the degree, and you’ll pay for the Pad in Uni fees, obviously.

On Saturday, Adelaide University announced that all students enrolled in the first year of an undergraduate Science program at the University for 2011 will receive a free Apple iPad.

Not so much a free Apple iPad to play Angry Birds HD on — although it’s a fair guess that a modicum of that will happen — but an iPad for science studies. In a statement, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Sciences, Professor Bob Hill stated that “Our teaching material will be more accessible, more relevant and more frequently updated, providing the flexible learning environment that students are looking for.”

Before you all rush to enrol at Adelaide for O-Week only, the release does note that “the iPad will remain the property of the Faculty of Sciences until 31 March 2011. This is the cut-off date for students to decide whether or not they want to continue with their studies. After that date, if the student continues to study Science, the ownership of the iPad transfers to the student. Students who discontinue their science studies prior to 31 March 2011 will need to return the iPad.”

It’s amazing that the university would throw away money like this. In fact, it’s downright irresponsible. The medicine faculty is tiny, ancient and smells like sheep, despite holding one of the best medicine courses in Australia (far superior to Monash, for those inclined to argue that way) and though medicine and dentistry brings in huge amounts of money for the university (even comparable to science), the building has remained the same concrete and asbestos institution for the last 100 years (actually longer, but can’t recall the year). The fact that the entire engineering school was rebuilt and supplied with 9 flatscreen televisions for display in the foyer (two of which are already broken) when computers regularly break in the main computer room of the medicine and dental faculty is a downright travesty. Giving free ipads to every single student is just making a further mockery of the university.

Yeah, but Adelaide med students just drink anyway, they wouldn’t notice money being spend on the building :D

Sounds to me like the uni is acting as a kind of finance company, so…how does this equate to them throwing money away?

Seems to me that you could still enrol in a full semester, claim the iPad, then drop every course except for one in the first semester (keep second semester enrolled) and keep the iPad. (Withdrawing from the 2nd semester courses at any time after the ownership has transferred to you)

    https://access.adelaide.edu.au/courses/details.asp?year=2010&course=004145+1+3010+1

It appears that Physics 1002 is only $531 on HECS. 20% discount if you pay up front (I’m quite sure) which leaves you with an iPad either on your HECS, or costing $425.

Of course, you could still enrol in the course and keep the iPad until March 31 (a good 3-4 weeks) and you can test it until then. A decent test drive if you are unsure that you want one.
