AFL, NRL Get The 3D Go-Ahead

Both codes will get the full 3D treatment for this year’s Grand Final season.

After allowing Channel Nine to experiment with 3D TV for the NRL State Of Origin and SBS to do likewise with the World Cup, the ACMA’s given the go-ahead for the grand finals of Australia’s two most hotly contested codes to be broadcast in 3D. According to Lara Sinclair at The Australian, they’re still only trials of the technology rather than full-scale licences to broadcast 3D TV all day, every day. Then again, given the relative dearth of good 3D material on offer to date, what would they broadcast?

Channel Nine’s already got some experience with 3D broadcasts, although it was criticised by the ACMA for not presenting its findings on the earlier trial, but this will be Seven’s first crack at a 3D broadcast. Channel Seven will show the AFL Grand Final in conjunction with Panasonic in HD on digital channel 40 on September 25, as well as on the new and still oddly named 7mate channel on channel 73.
