ACCC And ACMA Say ‘Be Cautious Buying 3D TV’

Gizmodo AU

Well this might put a dent in 3D TV sales: The ACCC and ACMA have sent out a press release today warning consumers to be cautious when buying a 3D-capable TV for the AFL and NRL grand finals. Why? Because some areas won’t receive the 3D trial signal.

Both government agencies are “concerned about marketing by some retailers that encourages consumers to buy a 3D television to watch the grand finals when some customers may be living in areas where the 3D format is unavailable”.

So remember folks – if you are planning to buy a TV specifically for watching the finals in 3D, you should probably check you’ll get that 3D signal before you swipe the credit card.

Tested it last night – all good. I am metro Melbourne though, so I don’t imagine this press release warning was aimed at me.

Riewolt sooking in 3D – awesome!

By the time Hobart gets 3D I imagine you mainlanders will be enjoying holographic 40000p broadcasts.

If you’ve got enough to spend on a 3DTV, you probably shouldn’t have any trouble getting the 3D Trial channel straight from the sat.

The ACCC and ACMA have seemed to be against 3d since it first started, When it was announced that the NRL grand final was going to be in 3d they had to kick up a stink about it also. So i say stuff them and go with foxtel as it will be getting the 3d channel and i’m sure in future when more content becomes available it will become mainstream just like how HD has started to evolve on foxtel now.

it’s easy to check if your area is covered if you have a non-3d digital set/tuner now – go to the trial channel, and if you see a split screen with two images side by side, you are gold. (note – your existing tuner must support H264, all “freeview” ones should and many other recent ones)
