Won’t Somebody Think Of The Dormouse?

Oh, somebody did think of the dormouse – and spent $US290,000 on building the little creatures a bridge over a busy road.

The dormouse bridge crosses a newly built bypass in South Wales, and while the usual sorts are rabid with rage about such a huge chunk of taxpayers money being spent on such a thing, isn’t it just…nice? Mankind is still capable of compassion. And no, they couldn’t have just made a tunnel – the dormouse lives in trees and isn’t really much of a mouse at all. [Daily Mail]

Uhhh, someone please tell me how the middle part joins to the side parts? Those bit’s of tubing don’t connect. Do the critters have to jump and hope for the best?

I’ve always wondered though… how do the animals know that this public service is there? Does the council hand out leaflets to all the dormice in the weeks leading up to the completion of the project?

I saw a couple of these kinds of things (in *New* South Wales :P) on my recent trip down to Melbourne, I think they were for koalas though. Pretty sure I saw koala warning signs around them.

Shame they couldn’t help all the kangaroos wallabies I saw lying on the side of the road…

In Canada they have built large bridges across some of the highways in the Rockies in Alberta, for deer/moose/wolves etc.

The wolves are crafty though, and are now using them to trap unsuspecting prey on the bridge by waiting on either side.

They’ve got these over some highway(s) in NSW for the possums and other climbing animals.
